Here's my situation. I'm about to start playing weekly for my church and really need a new amp head but really don't know much about amps because I haven't been playing that long. I had a good friend who moved and sold me his bass amp and cab really cheap. The cab is an Ampeg SVT15E. The head was an old Yamaha B100 made around 1983. The head is pretty much falling apart and I need to replace it. Problem is I am on an extremely tight budget, plus I live in the sticks and theres no major city within 100 miles so I'm pretty limited on available used gear.
I've got $300 available and could probably push it to $350 if I had to. Any suggestions on a good amp head that will make my SVT15E sound great while staying within my budget? I'll be playing contemporary Christian music but want the ability to play rock as well.
Thanks. |

GK, Hartke, SWR and Bugera all have affordable heads with good power. I picked up a small Behringer head(BXR1800H) and am having good luck with it. It is only pushing a single 12in speaker, though. You might need more power than I do, since I don't gig?
Hope you find something you like. |

Hartke 2500, about $250. 250 watts or 180 watts if you run a single cab. Powerful, versatile, well-made. Well worth the money. Read my review on BassChatUK or just check them out in the online sites.
