Bass Amp Question (so many choices!)

Sign in to disble this ad
Greetings all,

Great forum! I could use your wisdom on selecting an amp. I find myself back playing bass after far too many years. In defense of my absence (while I was playing guitar), I certainly listened and learned much about what good bass players do and how critical it is to work at it.

So I find myself in a folk/blues acoustic band playing bass with a great group of guys and gal. I had the good sense to hold on to my 1972 P-Bass which is a complete pleasure to play. But I'm struggling with AMP choices.

Thus my question: I don't need a lot of volume, but like a deep, warm sound. I won't be doiing much other than trying to hold the bottom end, keep the rhythm, and support my bandmates.

I do need light wt. at this stage in my life. I did opt for a SWL 15" Working Pro that I found on craigslist. It sounds fine but it's too bulkly for me to lug around. Excuse also my amp naivete, but it has too many controls! So, I'm thinking a 12" speaker of maybe two 10s. with a lightweight amp head. Or perhaps a combo? I'm sure there are a lot of choices. But I'm hoping I can impose upon you to help speed up my learning curve. Under $500 would be nice.

Dude, welcome, I am new hear as well and have been getting back into playing more bass (I too have been playing too much guitar the past few years.) At any rate, I recently updated much of my gear. For years I played a Gallien Krueger 800RB through a 4x10" cab. Great rig, but heavy as hell. And as I have gotten older, lightweight is key to me. So now I am using a Gallien Krueger MB200 (super simple setup, plenty of power to compete with a moderate drummer and 2 guitars) and a lightweight 1x15" cab ( I would tell you the make and model, but the company is not one I would ever deal with again...Dr...). My total rig weight is under 45lbs and sounds stellar. For practice I have a 1x10" cab that I use with the MB200, and it is plenty loud (and that rig weighs 30lbs, until I switch out the speaker for a nice Neo, then it will be closer to 25lbs). So there you go. I have always used heads and cabs because I like the versatility.
For about $500, you could get a MB200 and a decent 2x10" cab, or 1x15" cab that would not be too heavy. If you have a little more scratch, I would go with an MB200 and an Avatar 2x10 (total cost would be about $650 depending on cab options).

I will check out the MB200. Thanks so much for your thoughts on the matter. Much appreciated!

Another plug for the GK. I love my little amp.
