Bass Amps on a Budget.

Sign in to disble this ad
I picked up the bass about a year ago and I've played consistently throughout that time. I've been using the guitar amp that I have had since I was in junior high and I want to upgrade to a real bass amp but I don't know where to start. I'm on a budget, and I'm willing to spend at most around 400 dollars. Obviously I'm not looking for anything special, so what would you guys recommend?

Peavey makes some great entry level stuff, especially if you buy used.

Methinks we need more information as to what you need.
How loud, what sort of sound, how portable?

For $400, you could go used and get a decent 4x10 and ~250 watts.

Well I'm a big reggae fan so I'm into the really deep tones that are characteristic of that genre, but I'm also teaching myself to slap so who knows what my interests will be in the future. At this point all I'm really looking for is an entry level amp that I can play with and then develop the sound I'm looking for. As for portability, that's not an issue because if I ever need to take it somewhere, I have a truck to move it with.
Would you guys recommend getting a used amp or is that just because its the best way to get one on a budget?

Thanks for the quick feedback by the way.

why not? look for 4x10 boxes and amps with as much power as you can find. power is more important than EQ or features, really.

I'm thinking Carvin's MB series? I believe the MB10 can be had for around 300.
Check that if you wish. Call Flock, at Carvin San Diego. He has taken care of me.

I do all the time with good luck. See what's available in your price range. If you don't know what something is, ask here. Somebody will have had one or played one. With craigslist deals, patience is usually key. Have your $ put aside for when the right deal shows up.

I would say go used maybe the Hartke VX3500. Its a 350 watt HA3500 head with a410 cabinet. I have had good experiences with mine. Either that or a used head in the 200 to 300 watt range with a 210, 410 or 115 cabinet. If you look around that 400 can take you pretty far.

Your local CL is probably the best place to look. Someone unfortunately in your area is hurting for cash and needs to sell there rig to get said cash. That's were I have gotten all of my amps.

This is a good bet: Peavey Tour TKO 115 | Sweetwater.com

You can find it $50 cheaper or get Sweetwater to price match.

It's a combo, but it has plenty of volume and flexibility.

Most definitely. Craigslist is awesome, especially if you live near/in a big town.
Granted, you need to be cautious sometimes as gear can be no good, but you can also find amazing deals.

Before buying anything used, have it looked over by someone you trust to make sure everything works as it should. Also, do a little research on it to make sure it's what you're looking for and to make sure you're paying a fair price.

Given your location and population base, Craigslist should have lots of treasures.

Take a flashlight to closely check the speakers for creases near the surround that indicate over-excursion; speakers thus damaged can sound OK at lower volume but will distort badly when played loudly.

Playing loud is more fun!

Peavey Full Stack
Looks like a Peavey Mark III (or IV) head with 3620 (two 18s and two 10s) cabinet; the seller is "willing to take any reasonable amount..."

Just one of many in your area.
