That said each and every one of us is free to perform as we feel and if that includes "custom" finishes more power to you!

| | | Buck up Fuzzy, I've been searchin eBay for cheapo scarves, shawls, wraps, and table cloths to make another grill cover for the Genz Benz.
Here's some contenders.
I'm not in love with anything I've found yet, well, there was a Versace shawl that was amazing but it sold for over $200 so that was not gonna happen. Too bad, I really did like it but $20 is about all I can spare for this project. All I need is just the right piece of material.
Any one got any ideas for customizing the Genz Benz CHEAP lay it on me. I would prefer to match it to the Peavey in some general way. I thought about painting the front of the cab and grille bright contrasting colors or maybe utilizing various stencils but nothing I can do with paint would have the multitude of colors, intricate design, or be as easy as making another cloth cover. Plus I'm kinda messy with paint, dont wanna paint the speaker...speaking of which, I wonder if you can paint rat fur? Hummmm....
I think this is the photo you were referencing that you had trouble getting to post.

Obviously, as you progress from 100% (nothing) to 0% (solid) the audible effect increases.
The vivid colors of these fabrics makes me wonder about the percentage of open area. There may be other important factors, such as total area and fabric weight. And the effect on sound probably varies with frequency, with high frequencies more affected than lows.
But if you like the way it looks, and the way it sounds... cool. |

And the effect on sound probably varies with frequency, with high frequencies more affected than lows. | Elasticity and the density of the weave seem to be the most important factors. I cant put it into words but I know what works when I feel the material with my hands.
The first one I ever did was for a combo amp, the material was too thick, not enough air flow I guess. In a fairly short amount of time it stretched out and began to flap and ripple. At higher volumes certain frequencies caused it to vibrate so vigorously as to create a noticeable buzzing noise. I believe I used a large cotton bandanna. I re-did it with some synthetic stretchy material and it worked fine.
The one pictured was done in '92 and saw heavy gigging for several years with virtually no visible wear and zero streching.
The materials that work best (for me) are feather light with a medium weave and mildly strechy. When held up to the light the colors look pale, almost see-through, but because no light is showing through on the amp side you cant tell how transparent it is and the colors are darker, more vibrant. And they have no noticeable effect on the sound.
Its stupid easy to make these custom grills, I'm a total hack and I can do it. I've done several, I only wish I had photos of the others I've made.
