It's a very good idea if You want to get rid of the amp.
Lowering the voltage is
NOT done for protecting the speakers, but to make the amp distort "sweeter". While there can be truth to some with that claim, there's way safer ways to acchieve the same effect.
As for using guitar speakers with bass, if Your ears work and there's not too much empty space in between, it'll be allright.
