Question A bass newbie that needs rig advise!

I recently started playing bass and I'm trying to figure out my "sound".
Currently, I have the following at my disposal:
Ampeg svp-bsp
Swr pb-200
Ampeg SVT-48he(x2)
Hartke 4.5 xl series

I've spent a bunch of time reading, but could use a hand determining what power amp would suite me best. Keep in mind, I like the "sound" of bands like Helmet, A Perfect Circle, clutch, etch...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well, the Ampeg SVP-BSP is a preamp. No power section, no speakers. The SWR PB-200 is a preamp/power amp. No speakers. The other two are 4x10 speaker cabinets, no power amp or preamp.

So, you're going to need at least the SWR PB-200 if you want play through speakers, and you'll need speakers. So it seems that the SWR plus the pair of Ampeg SVT 48HE speaker cabinets is what you actually have available to make loud musical rumbles with. That ain't a bad setup.

Thanks for the reply. I've been playing the swr through the ampegs, but I only get a clean tone and it seems to clip a lot. A friend gave me his ampeg head saying it would give me the distortion I'm looking for. Any recommendations on a power amp? My band is going to be recording a demo soon and I'd really like to hone in my sound (and stop the clipping )

What kind of sound are you going for? What bands do you like, who are you modeling "your sound" around?

There are a Crown Powertech 2 and a QSC GXE available on Craigslist. Would either of these be ok with the SVT-BSP?

"See top post" instead of typing out the 6 words listing the bands (including "etch" instead of "etc" or "etcetera"?)

I'm out. Have a day.

There's some reviews for the Ampeg preamp right here on this site: http://www.talkbass.com/reviews/show...svp-bsp/cat/26

Sorry, I missed that entirely. Great bands and bass tone to aspire to, for sure.

The Ampeg pre is a good start. Using the gear you currently have, I'd experiment with different combos. Plug the Ampeg pre into the effects loop return of the SWR powering the Hartke cab.

A P/J bass would be a good choice for your tone goals too.

Ultimately you may want to try a Sansamp, Ampeg preamp, 500-600w poweramp going to an 8x10" of choice
