Bass Noob Question (building a rig with a friend)

Sign in to disble this ad
My friend John (also plays Bass with me in my band) is looking for a new Bass rig. He currently has a 1x15 combo amp from H+K (isn't loud enough / he doesn't like the tone much)

He was considering going with an Ampeg tube head; but because its a tube head its going to get really heavy and the cost of tube upkeep and maintenance is also a factor (it uses x6 6550's + pre amp tubes)

I suggested trying a Carvin DCM1540L and using something like a used PODX3 rackmount for a pre amp

This way he can use it for both a Bass rig and a guitar rig; I guess the tone he is going for is something similar to Cynic / Scale the Summit; what would you guys recommend for him?

As far as cabs go, I'm going to lend him my cab for the time being (the one on the right), i have no idea what it is or what speakers are in it (i bought it from an old friend he sold his entire bass rig a few years ago).

There is no plate in the back either that identifies it; does it look familiar at all?

Looks like possibly an older Carvin 410.....Maybe a Crate....Those are the only 2 I can think of that ever used gray rat fur....
Pull a speaker and see if there are any identifying marks/stamps on the magnet or inside the cab itself?
