BASS RIG SUGGESTIONS?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am going to be playing a handful of shows this fall and I've been given the green light to go ahead and rent whatever my heart desires. The venues will be between 400-1300 capacity. The music is very heavy, loud, spacey, hardcore metal. Two guitarists who will be running 2 Marshall 4x12's each (with 2 powerful heads). So I would need to compete with some serious sound. Since I am renting the gear, I don't really have the option of going vintage. I'm thinking 2 SVT 810's should do the job. Just not sure what heads I should run with them. I will be using a few different fuzz/overdrives to set my tone so I'm mostly concerned about having enough power, volume, and clarity. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks...

I've tested (2) SvT 810E's with my SvT4pro in stereo and it is the way to go IMO. The SvT CL is married to the 810-E and the one I have runs one cab easy. I went through the other Ampeg heads and now I have the CL and I think its the best one. In your case I would lean toward the SvT 4Pro's for the extra headroom and durability. I am the first to post and you will no doubt get varied opinions but I would test out an svt-4pro with (2) 810E cabs in stereo....best of luck .....

You SHOULD be going through some hefty PA with that music/potential venue, so whatever you get will likely not be pushed or anything. I'd get a B15 mic'd and keep the rest of the cash in your pocket.

If you have to have a big rig on stage, SVT+8x10s.

The answer totally depends on whether or not you're going through a nice PA.
Of course, it really doesn't, becaues you want two 8x10 to look good either way.

Personally I would use two SWR Megoliath cabinets and two GK 2001 heads. Then you can run a dry signal through the top 4x10's with the tweeters and run your effect signals through the bottom 4x10's. This is what I do (kinda). Regardless, try the Megoliath cabinets out. They are clear, tough & LOUD.

Do something different!
Use the rental $ and DIY / have a local cab maker build you a pair of fEarful 1515/66's such as this:
fEarful™ 12/6 & 15/6 enclosure designs - FREE! (Part VI: Electric Boogaloo)

These cabs powered by rented high-wattage power amps such as Crown or QSC will kick some serious @ss

They would be my choice as well, obviously.

The problem is.... If he cut his own and assembled them they are still +/- $1000 per. There is roughly 215 parts involved not including the 171 visible screws per cabinet. They take some time to build...

There is also the possibility they are renting gear from venue to venue to avoid having the hassles. If going overseas, you can guarantee it.

You could consider getting a BassPODx3 and running direct to the board...voila, you've got dozens of great rigs on tap. The plus is that you own this piece of gear, sounds great when you decide to record, and you aren't tossing money down the rental drain.

If you're playing to larger crowds, you should have a solid PA with decent monitoring and don't really need a big rig unless you want one.

On the other hand...since you didn't ask about going direct and asked about a rig that's big with plenty of headroom and clarity that you can actually rent somewhere...Ampeg is really your only option. Some places will carry Peavey, and their Tour 810 is an all-around solid cabinet.

For clean, high headroom power, you might consider a single preamp/power amp combination so you don't have to deal with two heads.

Do you have a link to the rental facility to see what they offer?
