If I was trying to get that sound out of my rig, I would:

1. Set it basically flat, with a little treble & high mid bump.

2. Use a pick.

3. Play my P bass (optional).

That's it.

Hope this helps.

Oh, to the second question about the effect: I really couldn't hear where and effect was being used. However I am old and partially deaf. It just sounded like a good driven sound.

I've got a MMSRSH and a Demeter HPB-1 -- if I were chasing that tone, I'd switch the MM all the way down to the bridge pup, roll off a little treble, roll up a little bass, and then add mid to taste; mind you, that particular growl on top of the note is likely coming from the player really digging into it, probably with a pick. I don't use one, but I'd be plucking it hard to make sure that growl was there. Also, use nice, shiny new rounds on it - for that tone, maybe rotosound swings, or maybe rockbrights.
