Hello guys,
So tomorrow of craigs I am picking up a project combo.
A 70's vintage SG all tube bass amp. It has 1 15" driver and 2x10. It all tube I believe and it has 3 tubes. The sucker weighs in at about 140 some lb's...

(my back will get mad at me later I don't think it really know what it is in for...)
Anyways I am getting the amp pretty cheap being I have no way to verify it works since it comes with no tubes inside... So hence where the fun begins?
So from what i have read these amps are very very loud and bullet proof.
The tubes inside are two 8417 tubes and 1 12AX7A tube.
So the 8417 tubes are fairly rare so hence they are expensive. So I might be able to get a pair four around $100+. I have heard they push some of the other components pretty hard which can lead to failure. So not sure if I want them or not. They are used a lot by audiophiles in audiophile gear and not as much in bass amps or many musical amps for that matter. They are expensive, but they are supposed to last a long time. The thing is I really don't want to spend $100+ on tubes and stick them in there and find out something is messed up or blow one ... So being that I am not anywhere near a tube guru or even a tube guru's apprentice... (maybe I could be the minion of the tube guru's apprentice...

) I am not sure if there are any other tubes that fit this slot or if I could convert the tubes it takes to something cheaper by changing some electronics.
What do you guys think I should do? Get the ones its meant to take or change it up to something cheaper.
Maybe I will open it up after I get it and see just how it looks and if all the circuits look ok get the tubes?
Any of you guys have experience with these guys? or what I should do with the wierd tube demands it has?
I will probably need to get some new drivers or atleast have them get some new surrounds being the ones in there I believe are the original eminence ones.
So excited should be fun and it has a external speaker out... so maybe I can buy a 15" and stick it in my vintage bag end cab...

and have one big bad bullet-proof bodacious killer setup (that will hopefully remain in one place other wise I got to get something bigger than just a car...
thanks guys :-) I will try and post some pics once I pick it up
