When they don't rate to any standard. EIA, EIAJ, or FTC, Or even "Continuous", aka "RMS"
Unfortunately they are not the only amp maker that has switched to not bothering with a standard. The days of comparing power ratings except for pro-level amps is over.
You see a lot of them because they have good distribution and sales. They're big, heavy, and reliable. People trade up for smaller, lighter, louder.
