Bergantino and...9.0 or F500

Sign in to disble this ad
Covered a lot of this on the Bergantino threads but am interested in hearing from other TB'ers who may not have been following them.
Currently have a Berg AE112 and an AE212 with a Shuttle 9.0.
(AE112 for smaller gigs and AE212 for most of my others - cant run both together due to ohms)
Kjung and others are really making a good point for the Markbass F1 or F500 as a great pairing for these cabs (see Kjungs You Tube vids) , and as I dont have one to compare with my Shuttle, I would like to hear from anyone else using either of these rigs.
Really interested in the differences you may have found and why you think one may be a "better" (subjective I know) set up.

I use a Shuttle 9.0 with my AE212, and I previously used an F500.

They're more similar than they are different, and in a mix, you'd be hard pressed to tell them apart. The F500 is maybe a bit quicker, while the S9.0 isn't quite as punchy, but has a bit more meat (probably due to the tube, IMO). I prefer the two-band midrange EQ on the F500 to the single band on the S9.0, but the Shuttle does get louder than the F500 (although maybe not 9/5 louder, as their respective wattage ratings would imply).

Ultimately, the tipping point for me was GB's sterling customer service reputation, while Markbass is based overseas, and I've heard of some folks having challenges with their service group. I don't know that I'd ever require CS from either company (both amps seem very sturdy and reliable), but it does bring me some measure of comfort to know that I can count on GB to provide quick, solid service if I ever need it.

I have used both with my Bergs, and IME, the useable volume/output from both is very much in the same ballpark. The F500 is a little cleaner, and the 9.0 has just a touch of "hair" to it, but all in all, they are - as others have noted - more similar than dissimilar.

Just to derail this a bit, Tom, have you tried the new Aguilar Tone Hammer 500? Some people say it's like the F500, and others are saying it's like the DB750 (which, to me, is more or less a mathematical impossibility).

I have only played it at Winter NAMM, but it struck me as not really sounding like either the F500 or the DB750. I know it's a cop out, but it sounded like the Tone Hammer pedal, only amplified: solid, somewhat mid-focused, full, un-hyped.

I do like the sound but was just intrigued as to why some seemed to think the F500 was a better tonal match - looks like I'm keeping the Shuttle rig...sweeeeeeeeet
