I have a Trace V4 on the way ( as well as currently using a Trace V Type 300H hybrid) with a Berg HS410...which is great). I am thinking of upgrading the Berg to either the NV412 or NV610 and was wondering if anyone had compared the two. I play rock, classic rock and a bit of blues rock. Besides the new all tube V4, I play a Ric bass.
I have never played 12's so I don't really know what to expect.
Opinions ? |

I find its is actually a bit brighter than the 610 which has a bit more low mid focus. Either are real sweet, but I prefer the 412.
its just an opinion...
oh and I play stoner rock/ bluesy doom on a stingray with lots of watts.. tube or otherwise.

Perhaps I really should look at the 412 | I had the 610 a long while and yes, it is a definite go-to cab for rawk, especially with a high-end tube map like you having coming. But I can't imagine the 412 being any worse. Would actually be better for me w/ the 12's in there. At that point you're probably splitting hairs. |

I'll do some more side by sides and also both combined, been wanting to do that for a while now.

It just seems to have more of everything -lows, mids, and highs - compared to the 610. The 610 sounds smaller and more compressed in comparison, IMO/IME. The 412 can really handle the high power wallopings without wincing. |

| | | | Please no comments about the playing! Only been playing for a year or so, hope this might help some of those who're wanting to hear the difference between these two cabs.
Couple of clips with Jazz bass first.

| | | | The mp3s sound muffled compared the original wav files, I suppose it's the compression, sorry! Hope it's still of use though - there's certainly a pretty noticeable difference, although whether this would register much unless they were side by side I don't know.

| | | That looks much more balanced now!
The Ampeg through the 412 is VERY punchy and hard-edged! Almost like you get about the same sound with Marshall into 610 vs Ampeg into 412.
Be interesting to play around with these a bit.
Incidentally, a brief listen to Ampeg into 412 + 610 is very nice indeed!

| | | | OK, so they're not that different after all! Same basic feel, but the Ampeg definitely does have that harder edge, slightly more harsh, growly. You might say the Marshall is smoother or you might say it's muddy, you might say the Ampeg is clear or you might say it's harsh, it obviously depends on your point of view and the sound you're after.
No surprises, volume-wise they're similar - ie hellish loud! Not able to turn them right up but maxxing the master on the Marshall and turning the gain to the same level as the Ampeg the VBA is a little louder (extra 100W I suppose making a little difference).
