If you want to get a good growl out of a GK rig go with a lower watt, 700RB over the 1001RB. 1001RB will be real loud before you get that growl.

I was borrowing a GK head (not sure which one) and using my classic music man with it and it sounded HUGE. And I'm mostly a die hard Ampeg fan.

I would stick to what you can physically try out yourself....
and also have authorized repair service available

I also think all your first choices would give you the sound you want.

Depends on the sound you're going for, but to start you MUST have fresh rounds on your bass, otherwise you're just pissing in the wind if you're want to bring out that classic EBMM sound.

Here are a few amps that I've used with my EBMM basses and my thoughts on them:

1. GK700RBII - This was punch, crunch heaven! It had the snarliest tone of the lot, but it wasn't very supportive in the low end. Very mid-focused and only really applicable to punk, hard rock, and other super aggressive styles.

2. Ampeg SVT-CL - Probably the best sounding of the lot. The tone was warm and growly without being to over-the-top. It sat well in the mix and supported the entire band, but it didn't do slap stuff as well as I'd like.

3. Markbass LMIII - For the weight this head definitely wins out. That said, the tone was always clean and incapable of doing really aggressive tones. It was a more pleasant sounding amp.

4. Aguilar DB750 - This is my standard. It had all the goodness of the SVT, but it was also able to do modern tones much more easily, too. It was able to go cleaner and dirtier than the SVT as well. It's my number 1 choice, but it's very expensive and heavy.

I'll hardcore disagree with this statement...like argue the point to my grave type disagreement and I'm not even a GK fanboy!

Hi Again,
today I spent some time in a local shop testing (my musicman with new ernie ball regular slinky 50 to 105 strings) .. Among the amps I mentioned above a solid state Glockenklang Soul II with a 4x10 Aguilar Cab and a Mesa Boogie Block 750 (tube preamp) with a Mesa Boogie 8x10 Cab came closer to what I described above.

- Glockenklang: very clean powerful but somewhat cold sound tending to be too sharp with the highs; 4 fine & sensible EQ's,

- With the Mesa setup I got the sound I wanted - overal clean with heavy gnarling lows and crispy metallic highs but still a !warm! sound. However, tooo expensive...

I liked the mesa better because of the warmth combined with the rest (well, I actually should have tested the heads with the same cabs - no way, the shop assistant seemed to be too busy ...)

Question: does the Glockenklang Soul II sound similar to the Gallien Krueger 1001RBII?
