Best amp for public transportation?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm hoping all you knowledgeable ones out there can throw in your 2 cents on this one.
It's one of those odd questions that does not have an obvious answer. (not that I could find anyway)

When I think bass amps, the first thing that comes to mind is bigger is better! not always true but hey...

But what I'm looking for now is something a little different.
My situation is this:
1 I'm in college,
2 I live in a downtown studio apartment,
3 I rely on public transportation (buses), and friends (some with small cars), to get around outside of the normal daily walking distance stuff, errands, school etc.
and most importantly...
4 I'm starting to get called for a lot more gigs.

Thus the amp I'm looking for will be:
1 easy to transport in public transportation (while still allowing me to safely carry my bass)
2 have enough power to gig good medium+ sized clubs without problems
3 have a DI out to get that little extra somethin when necessary
and most importantly...
4 sound good

Does an amp like this even exist...or am I searching for the non-existent holy grail of bass amps?

Any input will be appriciated.
Thank you all,

Makoa

P.S.
Yes I have just thought about getting a car, but where is the fun in that?

First thing that comes to mind is Mesa Walkabout combo.

Or, microhead of your choice + boutique 10" cab.

Pick the micro head of your choice. I used to have a LMII, and could carry it + all cables, and other gig stuff in a backpack.

Had my bass in a gig bag.

Then pick a small / light cab. There are some small and very good single 15" cabs. Bag End makes a tiny 15 that sounds great. Maybe a neo 2x10.

You can always add a second speaker cab if you need more and have a friend's car or something.

That will cover it, and it's a big rig in a small package that you can move in 1 trip all by yourself.

The Walkabout is made for what you need and the best sounding choice.

If I'm on public transit, I'm running only a D.I.

all of the above excellent suggestions as regards to the gig, but to carry around, geeZZ. Consider the MarkBass Mini Mark. 150 watts combo, on it's own, Excellent DI On Board. Only 19lbs weight. Also you can add an 8 OHm cab to bring it to 250 watts. (leave an extension cab with the band mates) Check out the specs on the MarkBass Site. I would love the walkabout if I could carry it ! Some would say a MarkBass Mini Mark & and extesion cab, you could afford to buy a "run-about car" ! The MarkBass will still be driving in ten years, the car..........

Try an Ampeg micro VR

Bass in gig bag over shoulder. Head either in a backpack or carried. And cab in the other, or both of hands. A 2x10 cab that weighs 26 lbs, can't get much lighter.
