I'm looking for something that can super safely handle a 500ish watt head at 8 ohms (so actually putting out around 300 or 350 watts I would guess), I don't have any requirements for weight and size though the less heft the better, obviously. I don't know what head I'll be pairing with it, but as I'm windowshopping for my first real rig, getting an idea of what to look for would help.

Right now the frontrunner is a ceramic magnet Avatar because of the good things I've heard and because I don't have to worry about it being voiced for a specific head (this is a cab I want to keep around for a long time, or until I have much more money, at least). Any and all opinions are greatly appreciated.

You might want to check out some 2x12 cabs. Eventually get two for a vertical stack. Easily handle your power requirements and pretty much any local venue w/o p.a. support.

That was my original plan, but I figure I'll use a 2x10 until I need more power and then get another and tower it, better dispersion than all these diagonally oriented 2x12s that way

Avatar, Carvin, GK

The Avatar is probably the best affordable 2x10. This Carvin's a little cheaper and also comes in 2 or 4 ohms.

You can get a used Eden 210 T for $200 or Ebay or the 210 XLT for $350 used from time to time.

Yep, the used market is the BBFTB. Carvin and Avatar probably are in new stuff. GK's mb cabs are too but they have diagonal driver placement and need a little modding with some bracing and lining. There's a whole thread on that here somewhere. Cheap, easy, can do it in an afternoon. Doesn't fix the driver placement thing though.

Since I haven't developed the best ears yet and may not be able to tell if things have been abused a bit rather than just used I think I'm gonna go for a new Avatar and see if I need another later on. Didn't know about the Carvins, though, thanks people

I'm enjoying my GK Neo 2x10 that I picked up used for a song that is being driven by my Shuttle 6.0. Wouldn't have been my first choice if buying new, but to be honest, I can't complain about how its working out for me so far.
