| | | | Best Dub/Dubstep Bass Rig?
Sign in to disble this ad
Hello, I play in an electric bass with a Roland MIDI setup for synthbass sounds in a live Drum n Bass/Dubstep group. It's time to upgrade my rig and I really have no idea what to look for (I only started playing bass a few years ago and have only played on small combos). I need earth shattering low end over anything else (maybe an 18 on the bottom?), but the ability to get nice dub tones would be great as well, and I would like to keep the whole rig under $2,000. Any suggestions? |

Just get a rig that you dig the sound of and you'll be fine. The only "requirement" for a rig with this kind of music is one that has punchy lows and low mids.

| | | | I have all my effects worked out, I just don't know bass rigs, just looking for that setup with the huge lows. Right now I play an Ampeg 115 combo and it's just not cutting it. |

I'm running a stingray through and effects board(all the essentials) into a mesa walkabout and in the effects loop I have a sonic maximizer and an aphex 651 expressor with a powerhouse 210 and a 115 cab setup... the sound I get is pure friggin' sex.
On another note my buddy has a carvin and I played with it through the same setup and it sounded a little clearer, but the carvin just doesn't have the character of the walkabout... I don't quite know how to describe it. |

You definitely have some serious lows but a decent amount of mids. In the instructions there is an option for placeing a baffle to adjust the lows a wee bit. Used it with a 3 piece rock bank worked great. It's little much for my acoustic celtic/folk project but I will be using it in larger venues with a southern rock/ americana project.

Thanks for responding, coz so often these things are mentioned without the poster ever having heard or used them, or anything like them.
Best seasons to you! |

| | | | of course you wouldn't want a sub alone- they dont
sound like music , just the fundamentals- that say..a 4x10
can't touch at stage volume.
youll need a biamp and crossover. |

| | | | Thanks for responding everybody. I'm starting to think a sub w/ a 2x10 or 4x10 on top might be the way to go, I'm just not exactly sure how to set this up to maximize power and avoid doing damage, any feedback on that would be great. I'm a horn player just recently turned bass player, that's why I'm so clueless about all this. This track is an example of the sort of bass sounds I'm favoring lately:

J | Thank you, glad you're enjoying it. We started the group a little under 2 years ago in Burlington, VT and this past June we moved it to Brooklyn, NY. We are planning some short tours for this winter, around New England, Ontario and Quebec, and down the east coast to NC or possibly Atlanta, and we will be doing some more extensive touring in the next year. Interesting coincidence about your name and Atlanta -
Around ten years ago, I was in a band with a guy who also had a band called (the) Durians. They were more of a free experimental thing based out of Atlanta. The band I was in stole him for some gigs and recording. That project did something very similar to your Durians, though I think you guys have refined it to a level we never attained.
Its great to see what has become possible over the years since then.
I will continue to follow what you guys are doing with great interest.
-J

Now, I'm going to check out your music.
I'm in a new dub/electonica (with a little dubstep thrown in) project and I use a Mesa Boogie Fathom/M6 head with Mesa cabs (PH212/D115).
The Fathom head really produces serious clean deep low end, which I use for my baseline tone and then add all the effects. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
