Best Lightweight Combo 1x 10" or 1x 12" to go for??

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm hoping if people can recommed me a 1 x 10" or 1x12" combo.
I'm looking for something which is lightweight, will let me set-up and pack-up, and get in and out of venues as quickly as possible.

This will be used for gigs as stage monitoring for me and the drummer not just for rehearsals.

Needs to have the following features:
- tilt-back style,
- decent DI with separate Level control, pre/post switch,
- aux in
- heaphones out
- option of adding an external ext. speaker
- 300watts + with internal speaker.

I've searched the forum and read bits and pieces all over the place but thought it would better to start a thread and gather all the info in one place.
Music going to be used for, is all types, rock to smooth jazz to world music, slap, fingerstyle, and 5 string bass with a B string, so I need something which will handle the B string reasonably well.

Thanking you all in advance.

Upto around $1500-$1600 aussie dollars. Not really sure,
just want a combo which is more than just a practice amp with all or most of the features I've listed.

This might not be exactly what you mean but if I were in the need for a combo , then this one would more than do the job:

Maybe you're asking for too much. While playing rock (with a 5 string bass you say), something that will work as a stage monitor for you AND the drummer will not be a 1X10 or 1X12 to my knowledge. If there is something like that, I would like to know as well.

So how about these?:

Tilt-back but has no aux in and headphones out.

Not a tilt-back but has many many features including the ones you ask for. (I'm not sure about "decent DI with separate Level control, pre/post switch"...)

Why 300Watts with only one speaker? That doesn't make sense.

Genz Benz Shuttle series has some really great sounding combos. The direct out records well too. (I am using the Shuttle Max 6.0 which has both FET and tube channels. the FEt is the one i have ben using inthe studio.)

How about a custom airhead cabinet with a micro amp? Actually, any of the super lightweight heads might do as they're easy to carry anyway (such as MarkBass, Carvin BX500, GK 500, etc). A 1x12 (+horn if desired) from Shroeder, or an LDS cabinet, or even a fearful 1x12 (+6) could get plenty of volume.

I love my Yamaha BBT500100 combo. It's feature-rich and all in weighs about 35 lbs.

You should be able to find one for super cheap somewhere used as they're discontinued.

This will give you something now and lots of time to really test out a bunch of other gear while you save for something newer.

Genz Benz NeoX112T and a Shuttle head of your choice (3.0, 6.0, 9.0). Tilts back, easy carry, incredible tone, great DI, mute, plenty of power. This gear is the bees knees

I agree, what you're looking for isn't a 1x10 or even a 1x12. Think more like 2x10 combo's, unless you'll always be using an ext cab, and if that's the case, might as well get a head and cab. Ideally, you want a 2x12, or more.

I only need this combo for stage monitoring for myself and the drummer to a less extent, who isn't a loud player.
Volume is fairly well controlled and NOT crazy LOUD.
I would have thought for that type of situation a wedge style combo i.e 1x10 or 1x12 would be more than enough.

Anyway after doing some more research there doesn't seem to be too many options with all the features I'm looking for. Here in Australia it's hard to get mainstream gear at reasonable prices at the best of times. I am willing to buy from overseas and ship it over myself if that is my only choice.

Some of the combos I was interested in was the following,

- EA iamp500wizzy12 combo - tilt style
- GK Neo112/700RBII-tilt style
- Line 6 112 - tilt style
- Hartke Hydrive-C112-tilt style
- MarkBass 210Combo-tilt style
- SWR Spellbinder 12

Out those my preference is either the EA Wizzy or GK700RB but no damn dealer here in Aus can get them.

Anyone have any experience with any of mentioned combos and can you share your thoughts. i'm especially interested in the Line 6, this looks very interesting and versatile.

Of those you mentioned, the Markbass would fulfill your needs and then some. Very good piece.

After that, GK and EA.

Ok, I have another idea: (MB NY604 cab + F500)
http://www.markbass.it/products.php?...&cat=2&vedi=91
http://www.markbass.it/products.php?...&cat=1&vedi=94

This combination is loud, portable and fine IMO. (Probably the loudest choice for that size/weight) But that cab is expensive...

If you're ready to pay more, it tilts back as well

Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0-12T. Meets all your specs. Great DI/pre/post, great sound, very portable, 375 alone, 600 watts with an extension, everything. I love mine.

300 watts with a single speaker will cut your choices down considerably. Are you sure you need that much power? You may need to make some comprimises.

My Hartke HyDrive 115c is 250 watts with a single speaker and many, but not all, of the other systems you require. Based on my experience with my 115c, I'd suspect the 112c would probably fit your needs.

+1. Before the combo G-K sold a 12", 8 Ohm, un-ported speaker cabinet. Very light weight (12 lb) & plenty of sound for a stage monitor with 150w. When more is needed I stack it with the 15" speaker from my Hartke KB 15. I drive it with an AI Clarus SL (150w at 8 Ohm, 250w at 2 Ohm) which weighs 2.5 lbs & fits in the pocket of a gig bag. I like AI's stuff. The Clarus Combo may be more hifi/acoustic than you like but, it's worth a look.

I find the PJB Briefcase sounds thin but am told the PJB Suitcase has a full sound.

Good hunting, 8-)

Other than the option of an aux in, the Hughes & Kettner Quantum 1x10 and 1x12 combos seem like a direct fit. They are tilt-back, lightweight, and extremely powerful.
