Best/loudest cab for vintage ampeg v4b

Sign in to disble this ad
Im looking for the cab to get the most volume out of my v4b. Don't really want another 810 and I'm not looking for a clean tone. Just as loud as I can be with one cab. I have plenty of other amps with more head room and yes I can use those with a dirt box but it's not the same. So all positive input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Which aspect of the 810 didn't you like? Size? Weight? Shape? Tone?

The Berg NV610 get rave reviews, a little smaller and a little lighter but similar tone. Otherwise I'd have to say a 412.

Something like a V4 cab would kick *** if you load it up with 2 Eminence Kappas. Not to mention it'd look wicked with the V4B.

the loudest cab that i've ever had (and heard) was an Ampeg B25 2x15 cab, loaded with two JBL E130's. it made my '71 V4B just as loud as my SVT/810 rig, and it sounded great.

IME, the E130 is still the most efficient (sensitive) speaker ever offered at 105db @ 1w/1m (and that's not just at 1Khz either).

I have two newer 810 cabs and they don't do it for me and looking for that old deep purple/yes kinda cranked amp tone. John I heard those clips you did with the e130/k140 and such and I liked that first speaker I think it was the e130. How hard are they to come by and will they hold up with what I'm doing. I think I can find a b25b cab cheap.

E130's can take more than a V4 can throw at them. they'll totally do the deep purple thing, and do it very well. they made quite a few of them so they're around, but you just have to be on the lookout. i bought my current two locally from craigslist (i removed them from some PA cabs that a guy was selling and bought them raw (not me, the speakers! )
their only drwback is that they weigh 22 1/4lbs each, but to me they're worth it.

I just finished some resto work on a V-4B cabinet with EVM 15L stockers. It's probably the loudest I've ever heard in a single cab with low wattage.....but also the largest, haha.

The info on the E130s is great....wow, 105db. Low xmax so probably lower power handling on the lower register but two would work fine with a V4 and sealed cab I'd think. Should be midrangey like Yes, etc.

You should try a 2x15, if you haven't already.

when i had a V4... I really like it with my Schroder 210212 cab. I got to A/B it with my ampeg 810 and the Schroder was louder and more defined.

Talking Umm!

The loudest single cab will probably be an old Acoustic 408 4 X 15.
If you cant find an old one, Monolith still make them:
415-RFL earth shaking 4x15 bass cabinet by MONOLITH Loudspeakers - " W E** S P E A K** V O L U M E S* . . . "
Hmm. I wonder what RFL stands for.
Louder if you find some vintage ultra efficient drivers for it.
Maybe 4 Altec alnico 418 series 2 drivers or 4 K130 JBL's,
then you would be Really Flipping Loud for your 100 watts.

a pair of bill fitzmaurice jack 15's or a pair of bag end s12L-d cabs would knock walls down with a tuned up v4b. fughettaboutit

So I'm thinking between a EV 15L and JBL E130, have either of these come stock in anything I can keep an eye out for? And anyone know how they sound tone wise in an optimal flat setting?

it used to be listed on their price sheet but they still offer it by request. it's the same size as their deep 2-10 (22 x 18 x 18). i got mine from bass emporium in texas. hands down the best single 15 cab i've ever owned or used, nothing compares in that size. i used a boogie diesel/ev15b for many years, and as truly great as that cab is this baggie is better still. would love to test ride a fitzmaurice jack 15 though....

Where are the clips you recorded with the v4 and the b25b with JBLs? I'm curious.

for the clips, i didn't use my V4 with a B25B cab (i sold that cab along time ago), i used a fender cab with a supertwin head.

here's the JBL comparison thread:

So you mean the S15L-D not S12?

the old Sunn 2x15 cabs work great with JBL's, as does the acoustic 406.
