IMHO best quality/value ratio (aka bang for the buck) is the Crown XLS Drivecore series. I have been using two of the 1500-watt units in various bass and PA applications for several years now, sometimes driving them very hard at high-power, high-temperature outdoor gigs. I have experienced only great sound and rock-solid reliability with these amps. The best prices I have found are from Northern Sound & Light: http://northernsound.net/

Usual disclaimer: YMMV (but I doubt it!)

For my money I don't think you can beat a used Stewart 2.1:

I just picked up four...2 1500's and 2 2500's. Reviews looked good, features were more than adequate, low weight, and priced right (www.estudiostar.com). I do wish the high pass filter had a 30 hz setting (the lowest is 50 hz) but I use an external processor which takes care of that chore so no big deal.

mackie

the old mackie FR series have highpass filters adjustable from 10hz to 170 hz, a nice feature. I used two of them for many gigs and re-acquired an FR800 for monitors recently, got it pretty cheaply too! they don't have speakon connectors tho.

I'm more comfortable with the quality of an old mackie than a new behringer.

We had great luck with both Bryston and QSC in the old Big Mo remote recording truck
I too am interested in the Crest Prolites fro bass guitar use (partly due to the .75V input sensitivity).

Any first hand experience with sonic quality and/or reliability.
I just can believe that these inexpensive light weight amps that are based on chips instead of discrete components can really hold up as well.
Something about you don't get something for nothing.
Could I be wrong?

Another +1 for the Crown XLS Drivecore. Talk about headroom -- 1500 watts!
Whew doggie!
