Best replacement speaker for Sunn 115

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm playing a 66 EBO thru this 115 sunn bottom and wonder if a different speaker would help tighten things up a wee bit .
Thinking JBL....or ???
I like the depth of this combination so going to a 2 x 10" cab. probably isn't the answer I'm looking for , but I'm open to all suggestions , except getting rid of the EBO.

Seems there's not a whole lotta love here for my set up.
Think Lanois Black Dub sound.

This is starting to become the recurring question of the week.

The best speaker for your cab is the one that it originally came with. The cabinet and porting were designed with the T/S parameters of that speaker in mind. At least it should have been.

Thanks, you're right, but it's a leetle boomy, so I was considering maybe a JBL or ???

Would I be better to go w/ a 2 x 10 cab or will that lose the big bottom sound ?

If it is an old Sunn, then it definitely hasn't been.

Best bet is to line the cab with knobbly foam, like mattress topper, might help it a bunch, an be cheap.

I put in the foam and also put it on a stand , about 3 ft. off the floor , which made a huge improvement.
Still may consider trying a jbl as they were an option in the orig. Sunn cab's....I'm sure it would be better than the Magna.

Not if it dates to roughly 1980 or earlier. Musical instrument cabs were not designed via T/S prior to that. Besides, driver technology has made major advancements in the last ten years, let alone the last thirty. But no one can make a recommendation without exact complete internal cab dimensions.

This is certainly a 70's cab. so I'm going to try an e145 in it. A tech will have one in about a wk. that I can try and return if I don't like the results.
