Best Small All-Valve Amp?

Sign in to disble this ad
Do any exists? Tried the small micro hybrids and am not that impressed with the overall tone. I'm looking for something that's all valve. Doesn't have to be w(B)all busting but have great tonal range. 50-100w?

Ashdown has a cool little one, I think it's called the 'lil bassterd. I know one TB'er has one and posted photos & a review.

Several amp heads come to mind;
1. Fender Bassman 50 - 50 watts
2. Fender Bassman 70 - 70 watts
3. Fender Bassman 100 - 100 watts
4. Traynor YBA-1 - 50 watts
5. Traynor YBA-1A - 90 watts
6. Ampeg V4-B - 100 watts
7. Ampeg B-25B - 50 - watts
8. Sunn 200S - 50 watts
9. Sunn 2000S - I think it's a 100 watts
10. Traynor YBA-3 - 100 watts
11. Ampeg V4BH - 100 watts

I'm sure I've forgotten a few, but others will fill in the blanks

My old Mesa Bass 400 is the most "compact" tube head I've encountered, thus far. At 4 rack spaces (shallow), it's not exactly a cigar box, but it is about half the cubic volume of the older, less powerful tube amps I use.

I didn't think of the Sunn 200S as being so handy until I got an early '70s Ampeg V-4B. Now by comparison the Sunn feels light and compact.

I'd love to see what they could do with modern materials & methods. A 60-100 watt tube head in the 20-30 pound range would be sweet! (Probably not a huge market for a thing that has less output than a micro-head and costs & weighs many times more... even if it did "feel" subtly better.)

Well, I've taken alot of time researching what you guys have provided and while all are quite good, most are seriously out of my price range. I thought I might be able to spend 400-500 on a decent amp but most of these run 2-3x as much.

jtb:Thanks for the links -The 65Amps are awesome but very expensive.

When you're playing through valve amps does it really matter if they're guitar or bass specific? I noticed the Marshall Supper Lead / Bass are basically the same. I guess with the propoer EQing you could probably get by. Even the Ceriatone / Weber kits are up there! Wow.

A Marshall JTM45 is great on bass. But I don't even need that much so I play a Soultone Marshall 20W Lead and Bass 2061X clone, which is both a bass and guitar amp with separate channels for each. Ceriatone makes a clone too, but looking now it seems they've just raised the prices on them (they were 500$ complete).

But here's a clip of mine:

check out this palm muted thumb clip:

I gig with this amp. I love it! Great tube tone, earthshaking bass, about 20 lbs.

case by case basis. many are very similar. a lot of fenders and ampegs can be used interchangeably, although the ampegs have slightly altered eq points to accomodate the different needs a little better. but it's been so long since i played a marshall tube bass amp that i can't remember if it's different from the guitar amps. i have a very hard time getting any bass heaviness out of marshall guitar amps because they hardly let you eq any bass into them.

Depends on the amp. If you're talking a modern high-gain head, probably not going to work so well. If you're talking an older style (or even newer) head which isn't designed to breakup early then no it doesn't matter. I played for a long time with an Ampeg V4 which was technically a guitar head but had nearly the same circuit as the V4B which was the bass version.
