Best use for an Eden WTDI

Sign in to disble this ad
I am considering picking up an Eden WTDI and just curious how people are using it and where it shines.

Here are the uses I thought of:
1. Preamp for recording direct
2. Preamp for live use running direct into mixing board
3. Preamp into power amp, power amp into bass cab or cabs
4. Preamp into another bass amp

My current rig is an Ampeg SVT3pro with the preamp out into a Crown K1 power amp, which is powering an Ampeg SVT410HLF and BXT210M. The speaker output of the SVT3pro is left unconnected.

So I thought of using the WTDI and putting it in the power amp in, and using an AB box to switch between the preamp of the SVT3pro and the WTDI for a different sound. I have also thought of running the WTDI into the front of the SVT3pro.

My final idea was powering one cab with the SVT3pro and using an AB box to switch between the WTDI direct into the K1 power amp and the other cab. I am not sure if I could split the signal and run both at the same time, but that is another interesting idea.

I am all about variety of sounds and tweaking. Any help would be appreciated. I have Fender Geddy Lee Jazz bass and Musicman Sterling HS 5 string as my 2 basses.

If I had your gear and were wanting to a/b I'd run both amps' for power...the SVT pushing the 210 and the Crown pushing the 410 with the eden or I'd run the crown as a slave with the WTDI in the front of the SVT.

Of course, you could run the slave signal through the eden to shape the sound coming out of the crown (enhance circuit?) but having a compressor and eq before your SVT you can cut everything you don't need out of your signal to let those tubes do their magic even better.

Where the eden shines is through your rig. I use mine often to make my bass sound more 'natural'/acoustic/hi-fi and to get more out of my amp setup. I really like it for shaping the low end of my tone to get a tighter bass response.

I also really like the sound of my amp without the eden so it's great to have another tone at the push of a button instead of an always on sort of thing...even though I have a compressor that'll probably always stay on I don't think I'm a hypocrite here.

Good luck!

You got it right. The Eden is awesome through my amp. I have a passive american jazz, and I wanted to add the versatility of a preamp. With the right amount of effort, I have been able to get "that sound" I have been looking for. I really like the eden in the front of my amp. Great pedal!

I'm using the WTDI straight into a Crown XLS 1500 poweramp. Sounds great. 1050 watts bridged mono into an LDS 15/6. Amp/pedal and rack total <15lbs and cost 600 bucks.

To make sure I am understanding this correctly, you are recommending running the WTDI through the front of the SVT3pro as the best option? I do already have a really killer Diamond Bass comp, I only use it with the Jazz bass though.

Thanks for chiming in. Running the WTDI into the crown directly for a small rig is appealing.

So from what I am getting from this thread the WTDI will be more than a backup, but will add to my rig.

Now to put it on the Christmas wish list.

A paperweight? Compared to the SABDDI those things are anemic. Just kidding. I'm sure they sound great if you like that Eden sound.

If by "anemic" you mean "slots pretty damn well into just about any kind of mix" then you're right.

Otherwise,

What part of 'Just Kidding' did you fail to understand? I do love being right.

My girlfriend runs it (quite nicely, I might add) in front of a Sansamp RBI and into a Hartke LH500. She felt the RBI was a little too thin sounding (I disagree, but whatevs), and whatever is going on with the Eden and RBI together really sounds fantastic.

I'm a huge Eden fan (use the WP100 preamp into a Carvin power amp) in general and as much as I like the RBI tone, the Eden definitely adds some nice depth to it.

I do like the Eden sound. I have liked the few Eden amps I have tried out and used to own an Eden Nemesis 410 combo.

My rig consists of a warwick thumb my 5 to a marbass tube compressor to a ampeg SVP pro with a sonic maximizer in the loop to a crown xls1000 powering two Eden d210 xsts. I love my sound and bought the wtdi primarily as a back up and thought I might be able to use it as a second tone.
I put it in after the mb just before the SVP and wow! I have rediscovered my tone, adds highs without harshness, the compressor is awesome and unlike some reviews of the enhance, is very usable too. It has become a major part of my tone. My favorite setting is bass @ 11:00, no bass boost, mids @ 1:00 - 2:30 no shift, highs @ 11:00, enhance @ 10:30, compression @ 2:00.
Top notch quality, flexable allocation, no noise, incredible value.

Thanks for the feedback. I have added it to my Christmas wish list, hopefully the wife comes through or I will have to try to take maters into my own hands and sell something to get it.

Did you notice the obligatory smilie as mandated when using humour in a post?

I did and I read the thread on putting a smile after humor, but still wasn't 100% sure.

Just got an Eden WTDI for Christmas. Only tried it as a door stop so far.

More info to come as I put it through its paces.

Hey Black, me too! Played around with it a bit last night. Definitely far more of a hi-fi, channel strip-like sound than my BDDI, and the tone controls produce results that are more predictable than those on the BDDI. Also NONE of the SVT-ness that the BDDI has. Or at least I couldn't locate any. Make sure you look here before you start turning knobs -- those response graphs are crucial to getting the most out of that little guy. One little trick I found to get a nice little bass boost around 50 Hz: enable the bass boost switch but also cut back on the bass control to reduce the bass boost's excessiveness, and it'll leave a little bump around 50 that'll add just a bit of heft to your signal. Not the same as a slight boost with the bass control, because that boosts at a far higher frequency, in fact very close to where the BDDI's bass boost occurs. Depends on what you want for the mix, of course.

My only complaint is that stupid megawatt blue LED. You could stick that thing inside the barrel of a disposable pen and sell it as a combat flashlight.

Toys. I love 'em.

I ordered one last week. I intend to do something similar: WTDI > power amp > 410. Save myself about $500 that way.
