Best value for a used 410?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking to add another 410 and I already know that the used market is my best bet. My budget is between $225-350 at this point. There are several cabs out there in my price range and I want the best value for my money.
I know Carvin cabs are usually a good value and I already own an SWR Workingman 410 that I really like.
However, there area a couple of brands that make multiple lines and I dont know which ones are the better cabs. Specifically, I mean G-K and Hartke. I know the Backline line is G-K's entry model but I dont know which is which out of the other lines they sell.

I'd also like recommendations on other brands to think about. I play classic/modern rocks covers, primarily on 4 stringers with standard tuning. Once in a while a 5 slips into the mix and we might be doing some stuff tuned down 1/2 a step.

I'd like to know pros & cons-I want to know ones to consider or ones to avoid.

Thanks

EDIT: Whoops-forgot to say, I prefer 8 ohm cabs but 4 ohm would be OK too.

Haven't looked at a lot of used stuff lately, but I picked up my Ampeg SVT 410 HE for $200 (I think) a few years ago. Finally checked the serial # the other day and it's a '92, made in USA. 8 ohms and has handled every amp I've hit it with really well.

I play 5 string all the time and it handles it well. First Ampeg I've had, and after gigging it at least once a week for a couple years, it still does well when I use it. 20 years old and no rattles or issues. I've also had various SWR, Hartke and GK. Just thought I'd throw the Ampeg into your mix for a little more confusion. Happy hunting!

If you like the SWR Workingman's 410, why not grab another one of those? They can be had at the low end of your price range all day long. At the upper end of that range, I'm pretty sure you could also score an SWR Goliath 410. Any of Goliath series can definitely manage the 5er.

Sorry I can't really offer a lot of help with the other cabs. I don't have a lot of play time on most of the G-K or Hartke stuff, but I've generally like the G-K cabs I've tried.

Good luck in your search.

I'll 2nd SWR. They are not the flavor of the month anymore, but they are good gear.

There was an SWR Goliath II on craigslist denver a couple weeks ago for $250. IMO, that's a steal.

I've found that the price of a 4X10 goes down as the weight goes up. So some of the older SWR's, Ampeg's, and Peavey's can be had pretty cheap. I bought a SWR Goliath II a year or so ago for $150.00. The sound wasn't quite what I was looking for so I sold it for a slight profit. The cab did thump though. So if you're happy with the SWR you have I would get another or maybe look at an older Goliath.

You might want to look at a matching cab. Getting a totally defferent 4x10 cab might not produce the results you are looking for. That being said, I liked my Hartke 4.5XL alot. I just didn't want to haul a 100lb cab around anymore. You should be able to find one for under $300.

Given what folks pay for brand new off-shore gear like Acoustic, it's a MEGA steal...!

when you're looking at used, large (heavy) gear, "what's a good deal" really depends on "what's available locally". No way that we can tell you that. Scour CL in your area, and an actual good deal will appear.

Thnaks for the various tips. I totally blanked on Ampeg so I'll have to look at those.

I gotta say, I do like the SWR I have already. And as long as the cab had decent casters, I'm not overly concerned about weight. I mean, I dont want an old Peavey 1820 to tote to a gig but one of their 410's couold do the trick.

I just dont like the idea of trolling CL looking for deals. I'm always afraid that people selling on there have beaten the gear literally to within an inch of its useful life and then try to make a score on it.
I'd MUCH rather go through our classifieds and hope I find someone semi-local to deal with. I just wish I lived closer to certain parts of the country where I see a lotta good deals.

Any other brands to consider? How about Acoustic?
