I'm currently using a pair of compact three-way cabs (Flite 103W) with my 5-strings. I love the wide, even tone I get from these little guys, but they're not cutting it for stage monitoring on a louder pop gig, with an aggressive drummer.
The pair stacks nearly 40 inches high, so the top cab is reasonably close to my ears. However, the 103W's only have a single 250-watt Eminence Beta 10 and a smallish mid driver (4", 50 watts?). That's not enough power handling, now that I'm slamming them with an SL900.
To further complicate things, I have chronic back trouble. I try to keep every item in my rig down to 40lb or less. As always, money is an issue as well.
I'm currently considering three options:
- An Audiokinesis Thunderchild
- A fEarful 12/6
- A 4-ohm Acme Low B2, or perhaps a stacked 8-ohm pair

2. You won't get a lot of answers in a 2 hour period in the middle of the day at the start of the work week in the wrong forum

I would recommend two of the new vertical Bergantino AE210's. (if you can still get them.. there should be some still in the system). Small, relatively light, and a nice tight, punchy, upper mid present yin yang to the Streamliners big bottom and smooth upper mids.
IMO there.

Wide and smooth is actually pretty much what I tend to go for. Gotta figure out how to audition a Thunderchild, and maybe a fEarful.
Anybody got other options to suggest? |

Anybody got other options to suggest? | Yeah, the Berg's are big bucks, but they are the least mid scooped cabs you will every hear. They have an aggressive bump in the mid mids and especially the upper mids which IMO works very well with the Streamliner. I LOVE the transition from the top of the driver to the tweeter in the AE210/410.... you get a good dose of upper mid grind from the woofer, and there is no hole at all between the woofer and the tweeter, which is crossed over a touch lower than most tweeters to my ear.
The 12/6 and Thunderchild actually 'sound' a bit mid scooped next to the Berg AE's, since the design of those cabs removes both the low mid bump and the upper mid bump that most bass cabs have. I actually prefer that lower mid and upper mid bump myself... that is where bass sits in the mix in teh contexts in which I perform, especially with a voiced head like the Streamliner.
However, the Thunderchild sounds great. I believe I have a clip of the Thunderchild and Streamliner on my Youtube channel if you are interested. |

You can't go wrong with either cab. If you're thinking strictly Streamliner 900 I give the slight edge to the 12/6, though with EQ the Thuderchild is soooo close.

| | | | How does anyone feel about the SL900 with a Epi PS410 (4 ohm). How do you think that would sound ?
