Having a back up plan usually means "no failures".
YMMV |

I predict its a light weight SS design, running into its minimum impedance and is being driven well into clipping and is thus going into thermal shutdown. |

Especially if your towing a small trailer, not really any shocks on those. Just a short drive will send endless hard shocks into a amp.
and knock stuff loose...there really is a reason for those nice foam filled road cases....
or atleast keep your head in the car...its somewhat lighter with the road bumps...trailers drive drummers crazy too they rattle all their drum heads loose and make the bass drum tune tight one night and loose another
My svt died after 2 shows into a small tour...ended up buying a peavey in the middle of nowhere at some shop...because its all they carried besides a few practice amp combos.
What was even better i would still stack my dead svt on the 8x10 to make it look "cool" and match... and hide the peavey behind the cabinet....
even better was when people made a nice comments about my tone..and how distinct that Ampeg tone was....i said oh yah its
sure is same reason i have such a love hate with peavey...dropped that thing a hundred times...still worked..
Treated my SVT with love and affection....broke...
always bring a back up man....learned the hard way i guess.....just try and blow a speaker while your at it...thats why they stick 8 of them in there....6 of them are extras.
Ampeg is real smart for adding those..
I got to hand it to Fender too , for throwing in those extra 3 strings

IMO, it's a good reason not to buy really old amps and expect them to be absolutely reliable... I agree with having a backup plan, though - but in my case, that means also carrying a high quality DI box, in addition to gigging with a somewhat current, proven amp...

I also don't know that they're known for reliability - like an 800rb is, for an example...
Granted, anything can crap out without warning, but there's such a thing as stacking the deck in your favor...

- georgestrings | George is right. I have been lucky enough to never have this happen. But I've always used decent gear. (Tech 21, GK, Carvin, SWR, Peavey, Carver) It's not super high end gear, but companies with a track record. I also use a pre-power amp set up and carry a spare DI. Soooo, yes Sh*t happens. But you can stack the deck in your favor with decent gear and a good DI. |

Yeah, the other part of that is that I've always made sure I had enough speakers for the job, so that I didn't have to push my rig all that hard... Truth is, the harder you push something, the more likely it is to break down on you - there's no avoiding that...
I tend to play in loud bands, so that usually means a 610, 810, or 215 - and not only do I get consistant, quality sound that way, I also dramatically decrease my chances of having a breakdown...
