Im thinking of getting a BGW 750 with an ashly sc40 to get that Moving Pictures tone. Has anyone had any experiences with this setup and is it worth it?

I think you'll find that you're not going to get the answers you're looking for.

IMO, to get a Geddy Lee sound you need to be Geddy...or have his hands surgically implanted onto your hands.

Hands have nothing to do with it!! It's in the mind that controls them that the secret lies.

+1 it's always best to create your own sound. Be influenced, of course, but blaze your own trail.

I hear a lot about it all being in the hands, and that is a bit an exaggeration - it's mostly in the hands. But, some of it IS the gear. I play with a heavy right hand and can cop a pretty convincing Geddy tone with the right equipment. Where do I fail? Well, I suck compared to Mr. Lee. But the sound? Yeah, I can get pretty close.

The bass tones on the tracks for Moving Pictures are killer, but did he use that setup in the studio to get those tones is my question?

Yes .. I used that Exact set up in the mid 80s... but i didnt sound like Geddy Lee... But it does sound huge.. I loved the BGW 750 only second to the old Crown PSA2.. I ran them both for years.. later went to a NEVE preamp in front of the BGW....
Back then i played a Steinberger, Yamaha BB3000s or 64 JAzz bass.. But i never sounded like Geddy...

Have to agree that 90% of the sound is technique. I can get pretty close to Geddy's sound with my Ken Lawrence 5 string through almost any rig that will let me dial in a little distortion. Geddy hits the strings much harder than I do, so I have to use a pick to cop his tone, but I can still get very close. The Lawrence 5 string is very different than a Fender Jazz, but it does have a fairly bright top end with a lot of zing.
