Bi-Amping question.

Sign in to disble this ad
I've seen a couple heads of Carvin heads on Craigslist and now I'm looking at the GK1001RB-II which states it's a 700w/50w "bi-amp" head.

I know a little about the acutal instruments but as far as bass amps I'm pretty much in the dark.

What IS bi-amping? How could it be beneficial?

Thanks.

Do a search. This is about #6 in the frequency of often asked questions.

My bad, I'm still new so I'm figuring the site out.

Thank you though.

I searched biamp, got 998 hits, and AFAIK that's the limit that the forum software allows. The actual is probably more like 9998.

Bill is right. Lots of info on the forums.

But I'll give you some starting background.

Biamping means that the signal from your bass is split into two signals at a crossover frequency, leaving you with one signal that contains everything above the crossover frequency and one with everything underneath. These two signals are powered by two different power amps and are being sent to two different cabs (in most cases, there are also cabs that can be driven as two separated cabs).

This GK bi-amp setup is unconventional. The crossover frequency is fixed at 5000hz, so the HF (50w) amp is only usable with a tweeter. As I understand it, the purpose is let the main amp distort without sending distortion to the tweeter. Requires separate wiring to/within the cab.
