Blew a speaker in Goliath JR. Replasement?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a SWR Goliath Jr from the 90's and I blew a speaker in it. It is a 4 ohm cab so I am assuming I need an 8 ohm replacement. Looking for suggestions and ideas on prices. Also would it be better to change both while I am at it?

Thanks but I was asking for opinions..... The FAQs are very informative but I am looking for personal opinions from hopefully first hand experience. Sorry if I was not clear.

Is your Jr a Goliath I,II. or III?
They used different drivers in each incarnation.

Eminence Legend BP102 is supposed to be good as a replacement. I have a couple on order now - currently using Eminence Delta 10s with good results - Avatar used to use these in his 210 cabs until he switched to custom Neo speakers.

damn!! I used to know what drivers they used, but can't remember now. In '96 they introduced the series III which used PAS drivers rated at 175 watts each. The IIs were rated at 250 watts total so that was a different driver.

Your best bet might be to figure your internal volume and tuning, then get a couple of Eminence Neo heavy duty tens for it.
Deltalite II 2510 might work.

IIRC SWR has a list of what speakers they used in all their cabs on their site.

I have the same cab and have had the BP102's in there for a short while for testing purposes. They sounded pretty good. You'll have to eq your amp a bit differently in order to get a hi-fi sound out of them, but they sound good. They'll have a deeper sound to them than the originals and slightly less high-end. But if you are not afraid of using your eq, then you'll find a happy medium.

One thing comes to mind - if you're planning on using that by itself with your 700rb-II, I'd plan to buy more drivers in the future... Those are great amps, but they can really stress drivers, if you're not careful... I guarantee it's the loudest amp for it's rating you'll ever experience - and that it's capable of putting out ALOT of low end...

Yeah, whatever you do, don't rely on SWR to get you a replacement.

Waiting six months for one was what led to me selling off all of my SWR stuff.

Thanks for the heads up. I would really like to find either a GK 800RB, 400 RB or even an Eden WT400 to run through the Goliath Jr. I had two of these cabs that I ran for years but I think I tried to push it too hard a few years back on a gig that I usually use my Goliath Sr for. But it was raining and I was lazy sooo.....

Thanks for the info and what to expect. I am just glad to finally get it back on the road. I tried to get replacements from Fender when they first blew because I was working at a music store. I placed the order twice and the drivers never came until months later when I no longer worked there but they had sold them to someone else. Oh well.

Scott,

Send it to Orange County Speaker Repair in California. Usually a one week turn around time, less money than a comparable replacement, and a new lease on life of the speakers designed for that specific cab. I've used them alot for recones. It's the most cost effective way for the SWR cabs. You won't be dissapointed.
