Blown 15" 200 watt Celestion driver in a MKV Trace Elliot 1518 cab

Hi folks,

As stated the original 200 watt driver fitted in this MKV Trace Elliot cab is kaput so what I'd like is a recommendation for a replacement 15" driver please.

I realise my best bet would be to have the original driver repaired, and I'm going to look into that, but if that's not possible what would be my best option?

I can't actually find any 200 watt 15" Celestion drivers so I was checking out Celestion BL15-250 but have since discovered they're no longer made. The alternative given is the Celestion TF 1525. Anyone have first hand experience of these?

There's also the Green Label Celestion BL15-300X out there but I'd only be running a 150 watt head through it. Would a 300 watt driver be worth considering as a replacement or would that be too much of a strain on a 150 head?

Cheers,
JDJ

... NEVER was a fan of Celestian bass speakers.
Maybe a Kappalite 3015 HO

Have you contacted Trace about replacement drivers?

DO NOT just put any old speaker in there. Edit: I'll just let Bill give the correct info instead of my half assed attempt.

A 300 pound weight might be a strain on a 150 pound lifter. But your amp isn't trying to lift your speaker.
Precise driver replacement requires either matching the original driver T/S specs (http://www.eminence.com/support/unde...dspeaker-data/) or reverse engineering the cab using a speaker modeling program.

Thanks for the replies folks,

My initial plan is to take it to a wee company in town who have done some work for me previously and see if the original driver can be salvaged. It may just be that some wiring has come loose in transit.
(Yes, I bought it off the Dreaded Ebay and had it couriered up here! The seller assured me that the cab was in full working order before he shipped it and this may well have been the case but those lovely folks at City Link may have fecked it. Unfortunately I have no way of knowing who's at fault. In his favour the seller has offered a refund - minus shipping - if I can't get it repaired)

Bill - thanks for the info regarding cab size/tuning V's replacement speakers etc but waaaay too technical for me I'm afraid. I'll leave that to the pro's I think!
Hopefully I can get the original driver back in working order cos they're really nice sounding cabs.

Failing that I'll whack it back on ebay as spares/repair and see if I can recoup my £40 shipping.

Thanks again,
JDJ

Given that he offered to refund you it back without argument, IMO, says he is being honest about it's condition prior to shipping (90% sure anyway).
There's always those few really good cons.
Personally, I would have refunded you inc shipping and paid return shipping myself - But that's me.

Our parcels are not handled by the courier as nicely as you or I would handle them. I insure every shipment for what a new one costs, just in case they damage it.

FedEx tried to hide some damage they did to my 1518 by reboxing it prior to delivering.... I caught them.

RE: Replacement Speaker for TE 1518

I bought a older Red stripe Trace Elliot 1518 cabinet that needs a 15" bass speaker.

I have an Eden stereo Bass amp that I want to run with this and I can do a Max of 8 ohm / 300 watts to this cabinet. My playing style is Funk/Afro-Cuban Rock and I like a clean but deep sounding bottom end.

I'm not sure what model speaker this cab originally came with so I'm looking for suggestions.

Thanks,ray

that's backwards.

it's like having a 3000lb car with tires that can support 5000 lbs. there's no extra "strain" on the car engine or anything.

bill F's right (of course), it's all about getting the right speaker for the specs of the box.

to strain my analogy further, those "5000lb test" tires may not have the right radius, tread type or whatever to get the best mileage and performance out of the car.
