Blown Speaker Cab Fix or Scrap?

Sign in to disble this ad
When you guys blow a speaker do you take it in to get fixed by a pro; do you order a replacement speaker and fix it yourself or do you just buy a new cabinet?

there's almost no way that buying a new cab will be cheaper than replacing or fixing the speaker, so i don't see why that should even be an option...

Speakers can usually be repaired by a process called 're-coning.' You just remove the blown speaker, send it for repair, and re-install it. Most speakers can be repaired this way, for much less than a replacement speaker.

As long as they are the identical drivers to those came out! Anything else is a crap shoot at best.

The answer to this depends on the particular cabinet in question. Behringer: scrap, SVT re-cone or replace drivers. JBL/EV et-al re-cone, Some Peavey drivers can be simply repaired by almost anyone by replacing the basket.

It is GS 410 Aguilar. Not sure how many speakers are blown. Not even sure how I will figure out which one is.

Depends on the box.

With the Aggy GS410: Use the battery and push tests to determine which driver(s) or the crossover is bad, and order factory replacements if its' 2 speakers or less.

If it's more than 2 speakers, scrap it. And by scrap it I mean take the good drivers out, sell them, and then sell the empty cabinet.

Alternatively, load it with a quartet of Basslight S2010s.

I've never blown a speaker in 40 years of playing.

But if I did, I'd replace with an identical driver; if one wasn't available, I'd get it reconed.

Since 1973, I haven't owned a cab cheap enough to simply dump.
