Blue Robbie vs. Universal Audio 610

just a question:

are these two comparable... that is, do they fill the same niche.

both have mic inputs as well as musical instrument inputs.

anybody out there have experience with both.

what are the pluses and minuses of each. my understanding is you can get them for a comparable price.

anyway, any thoughts or firsthand (hell, or even secondhand) knowledge appreciated.

The LA610 includes a 2-band EQ and a world-class compressor. Also its preamp stage has both gain and master volume controls, while the Robbie only has gain.

Also the LA610 mkII is twice the price of the Robbie.

i have a feeling that the OP is referring to the UA solo 610 ($799 street) and not the LA 610 or LA 610MKII. i've never tried a Blue Robbie ($899 street) but i can vouch for the LA610 mic pre since it's a part of my UA 6176 (610 +eq and 1176 compressor). IMO, it's one of the best sounding mic pre/instrument pre's currently available, even when not using any eq or bypassing the compressor.

I've used the LA610 and was very happy with the results. I only did a small session with it, and was not in control of it...I just got to play.

i apologize for not being clear... yes, i meant the 610 solo.

the LA 610, to my understanding (please correct if wrong) also incorporates a compressor and an eq. I was just referring to the sound of the 610 solo versus the sound of the Robbie, their ease of use and their features.

the LA 610 is another beast.

I am thinking (when i can afford to) of getting a 610 solo and a separate compressor. nothing against the LA 610, but it seems a more economical way to go.

anyway. if you have thoughts about the Robbie vs the 610 solo, I would like to hear them.

The Robbie is an okay basic mic pre; the UA Solo 610 is a world class mic pre that happens to be priced for the average Joe to buy and fall in love with, tonally. Perhaps this is a ploy on UA's part to make one eventually go for it's pricier, and just as wonderful, gear.

For the same price it really is a no-brainer, get the Solo 610.
