I'm opening a public rehearsal studio. Because of the fact that the amp is going to be used by many people and probably a lot of them won't be very gently I am looking for a real heavy duty workhorse but I don't want to spend too much. What would you suggest for a tippical small studio bass head and cab likewise?

Apart from specifics, spec your speaker cab's rating at 4x the head's rating. This will provide some "Xmax/Xlim cushion" against the morons you're sure to encounter. You want the head to fart out WAY before the speakers reach their max travel in situations where said morons believe it best to crank the amp's bass knob, crank the amp's bass EQ sliders, and crank their active basses' bass-boost knobs all at once. Also consider a sealed cab rather than a vented cab, because there's far more cone support down in the low region where vented cabs have already "given up."

I have always come across Peavey in public rehearsal studio I have used in the past. I have read they are work horses and you just can't kill them so, that maybe a good start for you. And go online and see what other public rehearsal studio are offering in the way of bass amps they usually have a list of available equipment.

GK or Peavey

Maybe a head with a DI as well so that the DI option is available.
