Breaking in an amp...

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a gig on Saturday night, and I am recieving a solid state, GK MB212 500 watt combo amp on Friday.

My idea was to play a string of loud MP3s on Friday through the amps input, all day long, so the amp would hopefully be ready by Saturday's gig. is this a good idea? does anyone have experience with "quickly" breaking in an amp for a gig the next day. and maybe some suggestions.

We are pretty loud, and will have the benefit of a sound tech.

Thanks.

The consensus of the legitimate experts that post here seems to be that this is not necessary and that the best way to break in your speakers is to just play through them.

While break-in is not an absolute necessity the speaker will work much better out of the gate if it is broken in. The problem in this case is that the sound levels required are going to be pretty loud, assuming the OP doesn't have a tone generator to feed the amp 30Hz or lower sine waves, which are very hard to hear. If you want to use MP3s that's OK, boost the bass EQ all the way, pull the rest of the EQ all the way down, don't go nuts on the volume and pray that the neighbors don't take offense.
