Broken GK head! Help!

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Gallien Krueger 1001rb that was in perfect condition. Then one day I was playing it and it fell off the top of my 810 cabinet. The head still turns on and it makes a very very small amount of noise when I play, similar to when you have the tuning mute button engaged. I don't have enough money to send it into GK to get it fixed so I figured I would have an easier time fixing it if I knew what was wrong with it first. If you have any suggestions please help!

Sadly I have a great suggestion: Tech time!

Please don't try and fix it yourself. You could make a $100 repair into a $500 one.

Or make a 100$ repair into a serious shocker

Well I was actually planning on taking it to one of my friends who knows a lot about fixing heads but I was hoping I could figure out what's wrong with it first!

Are You prepared to lose the head and probably ruin that friendship in the process?

GK (or any modern amp for that matter) isn't exactly known for the ease of repair. Heck, even an able tech has been unable to fix some of my "great finds".
That's why I'll try my darnest to concentrate on tube amps .

The (relative) upside to this problem is that it's probably mechanical in nature.

The downside is that it could wind up to be something like a cracked mainboard.

You won't know until you pull the cover. It won't hurt to have a look. Bring a good magnifying glass to the party. Many impact-related failures cause small etch/trace cracks or popped solder joints that are tough to see with the naked eye.

Ahh man, this hurts to hear. I imagined my GK700RB falling off my Ampeg 810E right away.

I'm a bit curious as to how it fell off the top of the cab?

Have the same head in a roadready rack on top of a Mesa/Boogie Roadready 1000 (yes, I am roadready as well ) and unless I pick it up and shove it off the top of the cab it will absolutely not budge...

Well I had it in a carpeted rack case on top of a non carpeted cab and I had my bass eq'd with a lot of low end so it just kind of vibrated off. It also fell right on top of my sansamp but luckily I have a warranty on that!

Probably wouldn't hurt to get a more efficient 810 next time so things aren't vibrating away. Or maybe make use of a piece of foam? I say leave the amp completely unplugged for a good hour or so just to make sure you won't get shocked and look for anything that has physically broken. But I wouldn't do anything other than look unless you are sure you know what you are about to do.
