"The Brown Sound"

...Like Rick Laird's sound on the Mahavishnu Live album... is it possible to get this without an SVT? I have a Trace Elliot MK IV into a 1048 cab, which I can sometimes pair with an 1153. Do I need an input stage added, or is it strictly a power-tube thing?

You can cop a lot of the tube sounds with a Sansamp VT-Bass pedal(or a Bassdriver). I am not super familar with a lot of the Mahavishnu stuff, but I think if you want to get in the ball park the pedal should work pretty well.
