Build a Copy of an EA Vl110

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everybody. I'm interested in building a cab inspired by the EA Vl-110. I got the measurements for the enclosure and am thinking of just going for it. Considering using an eminence 10 and some mid bass 5 inch driver (still not sure what will be best)...? i'm thinking about dropping the tweeter because as an URB player it seems less necessary... has anybody seen any plans for building such a cabinet? any thoughts of porting or not porting, driver selection or where to get/ how to build an adjustable crossover? Any tips would be great! thanks! J

The problem with cloning a speaker cabinet is that you'll need the same drivers as the original for similar results.

If all you have is the external dimensions and the way the baffle looks, you won't be copying the way they really are.

+1. You might want to start by reading this...
htttp://www.eaamps.com/index.php?p=translines&m=tech:

"... Currently EA is the only manufacturer of Transmission Line Cabinets for Musical Instrument applications. The widespread use of transmission lines in musical instrument cabinets is not evident due to the added design and engineering complexity. The manufacturing of a transmission line enclosure entails the use of jigs or the more preferred method of using a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) router to machine grooves in the panels to precisely locate the various internal baffles. Currently there is not an off the shelf program or set of tables for designing transmission line enclosures due to the complex factors of a transmission line cabinet."

That statement is about 12 years out of date, though.

Excellent! Now the OP can get to work.

[PS: my post above was meant to advise the OP that the EA cabs are not just a box with (or without) a port. I humbly bow down to the baffling mastery of greenboy, billf+ and others on this forum who actually know what they are doing with cab design.]

Good point. In addition, my understanding is that the VL line paid a lot of attention to crossover design, and ime the crossover is a significant piece of the puzzle for a multi-way design. Same box + same drivers + same crossover = clone. Something different = something different (not saying it wouldn't be a great cab, but it wouldn't be a clone).

PPS--i see the reference in EA's marketing materials -- "Imagine a tuba stuffed into a rectangular box." Sounds like a good idea, eh?
