buy a dropped svt2?

Sign in to disble this ad
Love this site- Thanks!
Came across a guy selling a dropped SVT2 for a few hundred bucks saying it can be fixed for another couple hundred bucks.
I havent seen this amp yet but was just wondering your opinions on whether this is worth even considering.
this is what seller says about it,
"it was dropped, it's still plays but has an annoying buzz/cracking sound when you pass 3 on the volume"

Thanks for all opinions!

Not worth it, in my opinion.
Read all the posts about amps that are
bad, right out of the box.
Too many things to go wrong with amps
to get one with obvious problems.
I like my amps "new."
YMMV.

Depends on the price. But, I also would be one who is able to crack it open and fix it myself, so I have that going for me.

I've seen that one on craigslist a couple times now. It is tempting. It's a bit of a gamble tho. On the plus side I heard from a tech who said that the II is easier to work on that the II Pro.

Those older models are definitely great heads, and fixed up would be awesome. I guess it really depends on what was broken when it was dropped. How likely is it that the transformers were damaged? Could just be a few loose components on the PCB in which case it could be a great deal. Then again, you don't know what other issues it had before it was dropped or what issues it may have down the line.

Honestly I think I'd pass unless I knew exactly what was wrong or could fix it myself.

Is there the possibility of having a tech take a look at it and give you an estimate for how much it would be to fix before you buy it?

The problem could be anything from a single broken circuit-board trace to fifty broken traces and parts popped out of their board holes. It's a gamble. I wouldn't touch the thing unless I myself had tech skills (I do) AND I had the time+patience to give it a go with the understanding that it could be a very long pull (I don't).

Thanks all.
Since I dont have tech skills nor the patience to wait 'hoping' that this could be a good deal and that I will be playing it soon I guess I will pass on this adventure into who knows where.
Thanks for all your replies!

Good move and you saved yourself some grief, most likely.
I usually get something new and make no-interest payments on it.

So how much is it... $300, $900?

If it still produces sound your trannys are probably fine.

My SVT-II non-pro took an extremely hard face-plant fall and started acting up immediately. The only problems mine suffered were some of the interconnect plugs between the preamp/poweramp sections had simply lost connection.
I thought my amp was toast but my repairs were only around $100. Maybe you'd get lucky to if your amp tech is honest like mine.

An SVT-11 in nice shape should be worth somewhere in the 750-1000 range...
