Buy a new head or get an additional pre-amp?

I bought a Hartke LH1000 about a year ago and it was everything I wanted at the time...which basically was just volume...this thing is crazy loud and I'd be hard pressed to find that in anther amp at the same price point. However lately I've been longing for more tonal options perhaps a la a graphic EQ. I'm torn between searching for a new amp or trying to find a decent preamp to run through the FX loop to make sure I can keep the volume of the Hartke.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

why a preamp? why not just a grapic eq for the loop? it would be cheaper than a preamp

Or trying getting a Boss GEB-7. It would be cheaper and give you an idea if you need a graphical EQ.
