Buyers remorse on Eden Nemesis 700

Sign in to disble this ad
I got a nemesis 700 head with two of the lightweight (2008?) cabs-one 2x10 and one 1x15. At $1,000 new (a great price, I think), it was a net swap for an older Trace Elliott 1x15 combo, a Peavey 2x10 cab, and a "spare" acoustig guitar. Motivated by sound, but also honestly in part by wanting a combo because it was tough lugging the Trace around.

After a few months, I still love the sound. The Enhance knob is just a great thing. But I have two beefs, both with the head. First, it is heavy. In a gator 2-high case, it is my heaviest piece of equipment. I know, all you SVT guys, 35 or so lbs is nothing, but it's heavier than I want. Also, while not an issue playing out, I sometimes use it in quieter settings and the fan comes on fairly often, without much reason. There are no top or bottom vents, so I doubt the travel case is keeping it too warm. The fan is loud--it came on while I was using it basically as a DI box recording with some friends playing acoustic (with the amp output volume at zero!), and we had to wait for it to turn off and start a new take.

So I find myself looking at Class D amps and plotting. Help me out by talking me down, please!

Sounds like you can't be talked down. Maybe someone should handcuff themselves to you and jump into that air cushion.

I got rid of my NA750 for basically the same reasons, although weight was the primary issue for me.

You've almost answered your own question....buy a dedicated DI for your recording projects. This is especially critical when dealing with situations where extraneous sonic intrusion is a no-no. Any way you can isolate your amp in another room? If it makes you feel any better, I have one power amp that sounds like the wind tunnel at NASA / Langley. Not truly noticeable in a live setting but unsuitable if used in a common or shared studio environment.

Sidenote: if you listen to the final piano chord in the Beatles' "A Day in the Life", the gain is cranked to the point you can hear the studio air conditioners as the chord decays. Part of the charm, I guess!

Which Nemesis model is it? The EN700? Or the RS700?

It's an RS. Except for the blue led panel on the front, aren't this, the EN and the current Eden "Black" WTB series 700 all the same amp?

I realize the thread is more than a year and a half old now. But I've just gotta follow up...

First of all, I had inquired as to whether Eric's Nemesis head was an EN700 or an RS700, because at the time I was contemplating making him an offer for it...and I had a definite (and purely aesthetic) preference for the EN700 model (all black).

Secondly, I have since that time picked up an RS700 from a fellow TalkBass member - in virtually brand-new condition and at a very competitive price - and am delighted with it. Haven't played it much just yet, other than to check it out at home and make sure I can get "my sound". But it sounds just great thus far. It'll be a pleasure to get it out on a gig, soon as the time is right.

Fan noise? I personally couldn't be less concerned about it. I don't expect this head will make any more noise than is typical for a bass head. As for recording, I have at least a couple of dedicated small rigs - plus a handful of DIs - that should readily get the job done - without me having to drag my Nemesis into a studio.

This baby is going to be dedicated exclusively to playing out...which is right where it belongs...
