Cab builders: question about jacks

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been slogging my way through past threads trying to find answers, but haven't run across this specific question yet.

I know that the Speakons are the preferred jack and are becoming the industry standard, but do you include both Speakon and 1/4" phone jacks in case you get caught with only a phone jack speaker cable?

How about the Speakon combo?
http://www.neutrik.com/us/en/audio/2...-V_detail.aspx

Can anyone direct me to a supplier of jack plates that is drilled for one Speakon only?

Thanks.

Hi.

I usually include them both. I also usually have at least the Speakons doubled for increased connectivity.

IIRC the combo isn't (wasn't?) air-tight like the regular one is so a separate chamber is necessary.

I'm not certain, but I think I've seen single hole dishes in Adam Hall catalogs.

Regards
Sam

I use the speakon combo. However, I make my own jack plates.
Here is a link to a blank 5x7 jack plate, very easy to drill it yourself.

I tested the combo and as far as I can tell it's airtight. I tried blowing bubbles through one, and got nothing.

The argument for having two even if you only need one is, one of these days you're going to have an intermittent connection and you won't know whether it's the jack or the cable. With a second jack as a backup, you can narrow it down, and have a better chance of making it through the gig if indeed it is the jack.

Thanks. I was thinking about using one in a build a few years ago, but when I read somewhere that it wasn't air-tight, that made me use the regular ones. I guess I'll give 'em a try then.

At EA we have found that some of the combo jacks were not airtight and moved away from them, during the prototype phase, on our Wizzy 10

+1 Tight as a drum! The 'two combo jack' format is a GREAT one.... lots of 'backup' capablity being able to use different cable formats, etc.

If you can CONSISTENTLY get airtight combo jacks, its great. IF not, stock up on rtf
