Cab Confusion.

Sign in to disble this ad
Part 1:

I picked up a Mesa 215 Road ready cab off of the old CList and the previous owner (sound guy) didn't know the Ohm rating. It was only $300 so I figured what the hell and took a risk. So with a Fluke I tested the cab and got 6Ohms. Great...

After talking to another Sound guy (a touring one) he mentioned that the Ohm reading will vary on a "dead cabinet". (assuming he meant one not plugged into an amp) At best I'd find an approximate. I'm hoping I did.

So after pulling a speaker out of the cab and flipping it over I saw an unfortunate amount of information on it. "EV" and "262" (possibly "626", It's been a day)
Anyone have any resources or know what the specs for these are? Ohm, RMS and/or Peak?

I'm shopping around for an amp and don't want to marry the two and have something go 'poof'

Amp Suggestions are appreciated ($500 range, new or used)

That's funny, I almost bought Rob's old Powerhouse 1000 with Floater stenciled on the side.

All the info I just found (to double check memory) said 4ohms.

Same question

Good price if it's original speakers. You got a Boogie Diesel or Powerhouse RR? I had the same question for my old 2x15 diesel way back a couple years ago and a knowledgeable person told me to plug the 1/4 cord into the cab, and test the tip and shaft of the remaining plug (normally the one going into the back of the amp) with the two leads of your tester. I got 4.9 which made more sense than your results. My speakers were the stock EM 15L.

It's an 8 ohm cab.

When I say 8 ohm, that's the "nominal impedance" rating. What you measured is the "DC resistance". It's a slightly different thing. But generally speaking the DC resistance will be lower than the nominal impedance. 8 ohm cabs will measure at 5 or 6 ohms. 4 ohm cabs will measure at 2 or 3 ohms.

No clue as to which,

Crap Cell pic attached.

The front cover has no latches to hold the panel on like i've seen with numerous other mesa cabs, rather it has some hard plastic stickle brick type thing.
