Cab for Crate Powerblock

Sign in to disble this ad
I've searched the forums for an answer to this question but as I'm not a musician I quickly get lost in the weeds.

I have a young bass-playing son in need of a portable amp for live performances of the very small sort (recitals, retirement homes, etc. - nothing terribly loud). It's always jazz, always clean with no effects. (Here's an example: YouTube - Wednesday recital).

I also have a Crate Powerblock. Can anyone recommend a specifc bass cab that would be well-suited for the Powerblock and not terribly heavy. I'm looking for a "Buy this one" kind of answer.

Thanks alot.

You might look into some of the newer lightweight Gallien Krueger cabs and combos... both the 210MBE and the 115MBE sell for $300 each, and if you shop around for an online coupon you might be able to get them for slightly less. This is assuming you're happy with the Crate's tone for bass... I know some folks like em, but I don't have any experience with them personally.

You could also check out the Gallien Krueger MB112, which is a 200 watt combo running through a single 12" speaker. The single 12" won't get super loud, but it might work for your purposes.

Gallien Krueger 115MBE - 8 Ohm you should be able to get one for about $270 or so. Try RMCAudioDirect with their "Old School Quote" button.

or +1 on the MB112 for around $300. Can't beat the price for a 112 cabinet with a 200 watt amp all under 30 pounds.

The Power Block is voiced for guitar.
Get an 8 ohm cabinet so you can run it bridged.

I've done this...

PM me if you want to know the trick on getting it to sound good... you can bypass the guitar part.

First one I thought of was Ampeg Portabass.

I just used an 1-12 extention cabinet then closed the back...

Just about anything will work for what you're describing.
