cab difference

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey,

I'm Justin, new to the forum, and to bass for that matter. I've been playing guitar for around 16 years, and have recently decided to try my hand at this. I was shopping around for equipment, and need a rig loud enough to play small to mid-size gigs. However, like I said, I'm new to the ins and outs of bass tone, so I was wondering what the difference was between a 410 cab and a 115.

Also, I was looking at some setups in the peavey tour series. I have been using peavey guitar amps for years, and have only good things to say, but as far as their bass amps go, I'm not sure.

I would like to go to a guitar center and try out some different things, but the closest one is like a 2 1/2-3 hour drive, and for a guy that works 50 hours a week with 2 kids and a pregnant wife, that's a trip I currently have no time for.

Any and all feedback welcome, and good to be here.

Justin

Peavey makes very good bass gear as they do PA gear, I have a bunch of both besides some other makes. You'll find some folks here don't like PV but to each their own, they're reliable and built like tanks and yes, you can get good tone but the beauty is in the ear of the beholder like anything else.

No real differences between 4-10s vs 1-15s intrinsically, it's a matter more of how the spkr cab was designed and what quality of drivers they put in there. That said, there are some sonic limitations w/each configuration, eg 2-10s generally not enough for a lot of larger/louder settings, 15s have some beaming issues w/the mids and highs, but like any engineering exercise, you have to make compromises. You will find excellent as well as excreable examples of every speaker configuration. So it's really a matter of what sounds good to you and what you're willing to schlep. And it depends on what kind of music you're going to be playing primarily. I know this sounds vague, but as you've no doubt learned from your guitar playing days you have to experiment and experience it yourself.

Check the FAQ sticky in the AMPS section of the bass guitar forum, very very helpful stuff in there.

Good luck and welcome to the deep end

One has four 10" speakers in it and the other has one 15" speaker in it.

Seriously though, speaker size has nothing to do with having deep response/punchy tone etc. The sticky at the top of the page has tons of info on it.

A 410 cab is more punchy, rich more in medium bass frequencies, a 115 is more emplty on the middle frequencies, more deep and warm in the bass sound.
You should think at what kind of sound you want to have and than think about the best cab.
Cheers. Enrico

You'd be surprised what you can get out of 2 112's plus that fits in the back seat next to the wife and kids

I have since favored this setup over 410's and single 15's

Not sure peavey offers this cab, but they do make great bass stuff! Never owned any, but I used to sell it a while back and got to really audition the stuff in our store and let me tell you... a peavey 410 through a Firebass 700 WILL GET LOOOOOUD!!!! And is very easy to get a good sound out of.

You can't judge a cab by the size of the drivers, but generally, a 4x10 will be louder than a 15, and handle more power too. Also, combining the 2, though popular, is a bad mix, as the 15 becomes a "weak link".
