Cab for DOOM, w/gk 700rb

Sign in to disble this ad
I need a new cab, that won't blow. I have a GK 700RB, I play sludge and doom type music. I also want the cab to be capable to run guitar through it. One of my bands is a 2 piece guitar and drums, I need to run the guitar rig and a bass rig together using a a/b/y box.

I was looking at a avatar neo 410. Any suggestions other suggestions?

Are you asking for the bass cab half here?

Guitar cabs for the guitar, and for the driven half of the bass rig. Various things will stop enough bottom getting to the guitar cab to break it, but a crossover used as a low pass will be safest, a driven guitar amp or most guitar distortion pedals will also roll off lows (but only when they are on). Leave the lows to the bass half, pull the bass eq down on the guitar side.

For the other side, pretty much any bass cab that can cope with the bottom. I use Aguilar GS412s, but never quite decided on the 'top' half, was using an 8x10 but newer plan is Vintage 30 loaded guitar cabs, picked up a Matamp one today.

Mostly, aim for a big modern bass cab, one recommended for detuning. Doom is a bit obsessed with vintage cabs, use them for the high end, modern cabs just do lows better than most old ones, and were never designed for detuning. I blame this for loads of Doom bands having lame bass sounds.

I'd be on the look out for a Peavey 412TVX/TXF...

It works great for bass or guitar.

It has a low tuning down to 30HZ...

Go look in the many 'cabs for detuning/extreme lows/LowX tuning' threads, that is what you should be gunning for. Even if you don't detune, a properly presented low E is mighty beefy.

I do tune down to an A for guitar. But I also use a 5 string bass only tuned a half step down, for another band.

Electric/Emperor 4x15, obviously.

Barring that, a mesa or ampeg 810, or perhaps a 2x15.

Ampeg 8x10s and the other vintage style cabs don't do extreme lows, and disappear below detuned guitars fairly easily, unless you compete on sheer volume. Fine if you don't have guitars to compete with. Their benefit is in their nice drive tones, but if you have another rig for drive, you'll be covering more of the same ground. Get something with lows to please the ERB crew, and carve some new low end territory. Got a mission to sort out all the doom bassists who have to use nasty fizz to make themselves audible under guitars playing bass notes.

Mids are more audible than lows, for me.

Sounds crazy, but a SWR Henry the 8x8. That with the GK head is an unstoppable pair, would kill to get the gear I've sold back!

I use emperor cabs and those guys will build you exactly what you want if you order one. They'll load it with different speakers and what not

Try this

Best balance of decent recording and being able to make out the backline form the videos I found. They do use all that stuff, its not on stage for the other bands.

I prefer 15's. Or an 810. That said, I use a 115/310 cab that works ok, but really wish I had more 15's.
