Cab or PA speakers?

Sign in to disble this ad
My friend is selling a pair of these:

Long & McQuade - Yorkville Sound YX10 150 Watt 10+1-inch Passive PA Speaker

for quite cheap.

I have an old acoustic 136 head, 125 watts RMS 4 ohms, so two of those would pair up nicely with it, but I'm wondering if it would even work. Would it sound good? Would it have enough low end? Would those be a suitable replacement for a cab?

If I wasn't going to buy those PA speakers, I'd be getting this:

Long & McQuade - Gallien-Krueger 210MBX - Bass Cabinet 200 Watts 2 X 10-Inch Drivers + Tweeter

However, it's a fair bit more expensive, and is also only 8 ohms.

Thanks!

Haven't heard 'em used for bass. I think that's what was used at a neighborhood party here a couple months ago for vocals. Either that or maybe a previous model of yorkville 10+tweet vocal pa speaks. Unmiced drums, small guitar combo's, bass player was using a little genz head and 115. Good, loud mids, crisp but not harsh top with good dispersion but couldn't really get a good hearing of any bottom being vocal only. The specs says it goes to 70 but either suspect or -10db, I wouldn't expect much from them below 100-150 hz. That may or may not work depending on your gigs/tone goals, etc. Would probably sound pretty good/clear with an upright if you didn't expect too much lows from them.

IMO/IME of course.

You play electric bass, a 115 with some decent mid response might sound better with an acoustic head.

So I would be much better off getting an actual bass cab? I could get the two speakers for cheaper than even a 1x15, but if they're no good for bass I'll spend the extra dough on an actual cab.

What kind of sound do you want? How big of places do you play? etc., etc.

They're not going to have a bunch of full bottom end but that's not what everybody wants.

Not very large. My friend plays bass with a 200 watt combo 2x10 in the same size rooms with no problem. And the genre I'd be playing would be more of a metal, or hard rock style.

You would be better off getting a dedicated bass cab in your situation. There are PA cabs capable of being great bass cabs but this isn't one of them. They are very inefficient in the lower octaves (below 200hz). It is a mistake to compare cabs by driver count.
