cab recommendations

Sign in to disble this ad
My bassist is looking for recommendations on cabs, he plays very deep and would like something thats fairly efficient speaker-wise. While he usually likes bigger speakers mixed with 10's for the power ratings he's looking for it'll probabaly need to 10s.

So he needs:

A cab that can handle at least 600w

Needs to be 8 ohms

Hopefully fairly efficient

Must handle lots of lows without farting out.

He's going to be running 2 cabs so if you know of 2 different cabs that work well together, feel free to mention them.

Feel free to give him options all over the board price wise.

What would you recommend?

Two fEarful 15/6's, or the equivalent from LoPhat or Baer amps.

Two Thunderchildren from Audiokinesis would probably work out.

Two Acme Flatwounds might work OK.

Not efficient but really low, http://www.acmebass.com/

Much more efficient, low enough, http://www.genzbenz.com/?fa=detail&m...sid=611&cid=96

Get 2 of either if buying 2 cabs.

Low and loud are on different ends of the portable enclosure spectrum. It's always a compromise.

If you are looking for very lows, maybe a sub and a Jack or two from Bill Fitzmaurice would work. Or an Omni 15 without the tweeter. Both are supposed to go deep efficiently.

Got to build it yourself or order it from a third party builder.

+1 on the BFM suggestion, There are quite a few good options there especially for low, loud and efficient. By the way did he get rid of the Carvin stuff finally??

The BFM and fEarful stuff is top shelf, I would've mentioned them along with the UBER as very efficent low capable cabs but most people are looking for a finished product. And after reading the Carvin thread you're not looking for the full range abilities that make the BFM and fEarful cabs so great.

+1 on the fEarful 1x15/2x15 solution.
If you don't have time for a custom build, I've always been impressed with the deep lows from my SWR Goliath III. These used PAS drivers but the newer series IV has Eminence. Don't know if the lows are as strong though.

Why don't you have Don at LDS custom build you a 12X10" + 8X18" all in one huge box so your bass player can have the tone you want him to have. Or.......................... devout a weekend to travel around with his bass and go to every music store you can and play everything you can find. Look for weird custom cabs on Craigslist and go try them. I always see "Super loud thunderous custom bass cab" ads on my area's CL. I personally think you are trying to achieve a sound that isn't there. I read through the Carvin bashing thread and it seems to me that you want your bass player felt and not heard. I play in A and have an super clean tone, no pedals no nothing. Passive bass>had>cab. My Carvin does the job well..... VERY WELL. Not all big speakers produce big sound.

The Carvin BRX10.4.

But, having Don at Low Down Sound build him two fEarful style cabinets without the tweeter...just the 3015LF and 6.5" midrange, well...that would kick both of your asses.

Also, a question on your ohms requirement...Are you looking for an 8 ohm total load? 4 ohms is generally the sweet spot that gets the most out of your usual suspect amps. Some will work at 2 ohms, but 4 is the norm. Two 8 ohm cabs will be a 4 ohm load at the amp...or you can opt for one larger 4 ohm cab.

Yeah, they took back the entire rig.

Very interesting, ill pass it on. I love my g-flex 2x12 and am impressed with Genz Benz.

Yeah i know loud and low are hard to get together, low is more important but if he can get something low enough and loud enough thats a fairly good compromise.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Thats what he's planning, i thought some suggestions would point him in the right direction though.

Yet his behringer 4x10 combo can do a decent job of it,it just lacks headroom and a little bit more oomph.

So basically you are saying behringer is the pinnacle of all bass amps?

Its the tone he wants, not some conspiracy starring guitar players everywhere, get a grip.

He had one of them, even tried it alone for the little bit of time. It sounded good but after the whole debacle he doesnt want to use carvin again, ever.

Im starting to think that no one reads what im writing, they just want to get in here and bash the guitar player.

4 ohms total with 2-8 ohm cabs. His idea is to use one 8 ohm cab for smaller gigs, or when space is a problem and 2 when its a bigger gig. All the amps he's looking at operate at around 500-600w at 8 ohm and 1000-1200w at 4 ohm.
