Cab regression....old is new...

So I came across a good score on a used SWR Goliath 410 (the original- Eden built, rear ported. Even says built by Eden on it).
Anyway, scored it for a nice price and was looking for another "cheap" cab to just leave at rehearsal.
And hell, I was stunned at how good of shape this is in.

Well, I picked it up on the way to my gig last week and thought "what the hell, I'll use it tonight".

Before I get into the deets about it, and not like we don't know about these already, I'll say that those who know me have heard me say that pretty much the best sounding rig I ever owned was my SWR Redhead with a Goliath 410 under it. So getting this cab wasn't a big stretch from what I liked or was expecting really.

With all the new cab designs out right now, I wonder really how far we have went and if we are making a circle.
I have owned a TON of high end cabs.
Everything from Bergantino to Epifani to AccuGroove to BagEnd and plenty of others.

I gotta say, this cab gave me, almost surprisingly everything all these other "high end" cabs did/have.
And to be honest, maybe in some areas out-did them.

When the Goliath III series cabs came out for example, they touted better low end etc....I wasn't impressed and stuck with my old ones.

The low end from this cab was very controlled, tight and defined. NOT boomy one bit.
Mids, unlike the later Eden and SWR cabs that had that "LA Sound" were nicely present and the classic Foster horn and "slice" was right there.

Was it a "dated" sound and one I formed my sound around as it was the cab kinda to have??
Maybe, but reciently owning/playing Genz Benz cabs and AccuGroove cabs, I didn't think this old school 410 was a step behind at all.

Anywho, the cab rocked, liked I kinda expected, but more so than I remembered. Again, I knew it would sound good, just maybe forgot how good it would sound.
Sure, plenty of guys guys will rush into this thread about "well the blah blah blah crossover isn't as blah blah blah X-Max of this driver blah blah blah" tech crap....bottom line is it sounds good.
It striks me as funny as these will be the same guys who will pump their P-Bass through a VT Bass pedal through their "high tech" amps/cabs too.....makes me giggle a bit.
I could replicate this in a smaller and lighter package...but not for $250!!!
Hell, for something I don't have to really move too often, I'm not overly concerned about the weight.
And plus, for a 410, if you recall the rear ported cabs have a pretty small foot print.

The guy I got it from has another one, might actually get it as $250 for a high quality "classic" 410 in awesome condition.

Other gear used was my Roscoe 6 string w/V-Bass set-up, PRS 4 string (ver 2) and GenzBenz 9.0.

I hear ya- I have one, and a GIII as well. Like you, I've got some boutique neo stuff but I'll never sell my old cabs. The GII is magic. Got a matching GII Junior as well. The two together is just dope.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not in the dis-like of the new cab designs camp.
I love what advances have been made.
Especially in the weight dept!!!!

But on the gig to be honest, how significiant do those advances in design actually become? Again, size/weight not being factored in.
And at what point do you not notice them- again, on the gig where it matters and not in you bedroom/basement.

Yep, I've yet to hear much of anything that sounds better than a Goliath II. Lots of things out there that sound as good now, but better? Nope.

I will say there are cabs that handle 5 string better.

Actually, it had zero issues hold true to my Roscoe's low B, which is pretty damn good.
And a few patches on my V-Bass I use are pretty brutal in the low end dept and the cab stood there and took it like an Asain hooker near a battleship who's crew is on shore leave.

But yeah....better is the key.

It just sucks major azz in the post gig gear load out dept.
But, that's why they make dolly-carts! (and drummers to help!)

Could be subjective.
Could be personal opinion.
I loved mine!
I have moved on to other cabs.
In fact if I have to go on the road some IIs or IIIs would be my fall back choice. They bring it. To me colorless enough to allow your own technique to be heard.
A Roscoe 5 with Ag pre has serious low end!
