Cab repairing - unit replacement

Sign in to disble this ad
So, i got this home-build 410 Cabinet from a friend of mine, and it turns out that one of the units is busted, now i want to replace it and my question is: Do I just find a, new unit, similar in wattage and ohm or does it have to be the exact same model as the other units? Or do I really need to replace all 4 units?

I probably should add that the cabinet doesn't need to sound good, it just needs to work without crashing.

Thanks in advance

SAME speaker.

Of a speakers specs, the wattage and the ohm rating are some of the least important.

Any speakers that share the same "air space" inside the cab need to have the same specs or they may actually cause further damage.

Even worse...................

By doing that, you change the resistance (Ohms) of the cab, and change the cabs tuning which could cause the other speakers to blow, or damage your head.

ETA - even now with the blown speaker still in there, everything I said above still applies. You need to stop using the cab until it is repaired.

Okay, I think I'll go looking for a matching speaker then. And just to be sure, there's no problem in mixing a new speaker with the 3 old ones?

As long as it is a complete match, and the other 3 are still functioning properly, there should be no problem.

Just make sure you wire it back in the same as the one you take out.

Not if they are the exact same make/model.

See if you can get your bad one re-coned. Cheaper than a new driver and insures a match. Search out a speaker repair service locally.

Cool, and thanks for the answer.
actually i got another question. I got a Hughes & Kettner basskick 515 combo with a 15" 8ohms speaker. The voice coil is broken, and i want to replace the speaker. Can I just replace this speaker with another 15" 8ohms speaker, or are there also other specs here I need to be aware of ?
Do you have any good links to websites about cabinet making?

Contact Hughes and Kettner and see if they'll recone the speaker. They make good gear and they probably have a custom speaker. It will be by far the easiest solution and will probably give the best results.
