Cab Selection for Dropped C

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been playing a 4 string since the day I started playing and last year I started playing in a Hard Rock/Metal Band that plays everything dropped (C-G-C-F)

I have a GK rig (700RB, Neo 212, Neo 115) that I really really love. It's my first "real" bass amp and I couldn't be happier with the quality/tone and all that. now, here's where the OCD part of me kicks in... My 115 is a little wider then my 212 at 20.5"w, the 115 is 23.5"w. So, for no other reason other than wanting a uniform stack I am going to replace my 212 with something.

Finally, here's the question... will I gain frequency response going to a 410 top as opposed to the 212? I don't know too much about the tech side of the Low C frequency and total speaker diameter and all that but, my amateurish thought is.. the more speaker diameter I have the more of that Low C is going to come through.

Am I way off? Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A 212 is a better match for a 115 than a 410. The general consensus is adding a 410 will turn your 115 into an expensive amp stand.

You could sell both and get the MBE212 and MBE115 and they stack perfectly, last time I checked..?

Speaker diameter isn't important, cab tuning is where it's at. I doubt either of those cabs will make much of the low C itself, even the lowest of your F# at a guess.

The trick to getting volume with the lowest notes is to lay off the bottom end EQ and boost above 80 Hz. Try it out with each single cab and whichever does better you keep and get another.

if you can find one, get a Basson. You can probably get one cheap. They have killers lows, but are heavy.

Drop C isn't that low. It's higher than a low B.

I've been using it for years and have had everything from Eden XLTs to Schroeder to Berg to Mesa to Aguilar in that time frame. You don't need anything weird or crazy, from experience and not "guesses". A 410 may or may not give you more "low end", actual or perceived. It's going to give you more of a different character than anything and if you like the 12's, then stick with 'em. That's why I have two.

If you want a uniform rig, play each cab individually and see what you like best. Then sell the other, and buy another of the kind you kept. I'm usually not a fan of mixing drivers in a rig unless you're miking each one up for their different tonal properties.
